Golden Calf (Film Award)
The Golden Calf ( Dutch : Gouden Kalf ) is the award of the Dutch Film Festival , which is held once a year in Utrecht . The prize has been awarded since 1981 and initially in the categories: Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Film, Best Short Film, Cultural Award and Honorary Award. In 2012 there were a total of 19 categories.
Well-known Dutch directors and actors who received the Golden Calf include Rutger Hauer , Louis van Gasteren , Paul Verhoeven , Eddy Terstall , Carice van Houten , Fons Rademakers , Martin Koolhoven , Alex van Warmerdam , Fedja van Huêt , Jean van de Velde , Dick Maas , Marleen Gorris , Ian Kerkhof , Jeroen Krabbé , Monic Hendrickx and Rijk de Gooyer .
statue
The golden calf statue depicts a golden calf looking into the sky. It was created in 1980 by the sculptor Theo Mackaay for the creator of the festival, Jos Stelling . Jos Stelling credits director Wim Verstappen with the idea for the golden calf , while Theo Makaay claims it for himself. The statue itself is a 33 cm high cast bronze sculpture. In the early years the calf was mounted on a marble base . In order to make it easier for the winners to raise the prize above their heads, that variant has now been replaced by a lighter version (also by Theo Mackaay).
Name and meaning
As in other European film awards - the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival or the Golden Lion in Venice - the name of the award refers to an animal. In addition, cows are one of the most common farm animals in the Netherlands.
Apart from this direct reference, the name also alludes to the biblical story of the golden calf ( Ex 32 EU ). The biblical calf was made on the God's mountain Horeb / Sinai by the priest Aaron at the urging of the Israelites lying at the foot of the mountain for worship. They had fallen away from believing in the liberating but invisible, incomprehensible God who had freed them from slavery in Egypt and led them through the desert. Unable to recognize the new and liberating in God's actions in them and stuck in old beliefs, they wanted to create an image of God that was visible and tangible for them and that they could worship. When Moses, at God's command, descends from the mountain with the two stone tablets ( Ten Commandments ) described by God himself and sees the idol , he destroys it, gathers the remaining believers and has the Israelites who have fallen from the faith killed. The remaining people lead Moses to the Promised Land .
By making and worshiping the golden calf, the Israelites are violating parts of the Ten Commandments that God gives his people through Moses on the Mount of God, in particular the prohibition of images . It says:
"I am Yahweh , your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the slave house. You are not to have any other gods besides me. You are not to make an image of God for yourself and any representation of anything in the sky above, on the earth below or in the water You shall not prostrate yourself to other gods or undertake to serve them, for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God: to those who are enemies of me I pursue the guilt of the fathers to the sons of the third and fourth generations; to those who love me and keep my commandments, I show my graces to thousands. You shall not abuse the name of the Lord your God; for the Lord does not leave him unpunished misused his name. (...) " (Ex 20,2-7, EÜ )

In the 1995 reality TV series Taxi , Rijk de Gooyer threw his Golden Calf on the street when he got into a taxi after an unsatisfactory closing ceremony at the Dutch Film Festival.
