Gerard Soeteman (born July 1, 1936 in Rotterdam ) is a Dutch screenwriter . After his debut with a television series in 1967, he is best known for his collaboration with Paul Verhoeven , from which the films Turkish Fruits (1973), The Soldier of Orange (1977), Flesh and Blood (1985) and Black, among others Book (2006) emerged. For Fons Rademakers he wrote the screenplay for the film adaptation of the novel Max Havelaar and the feature film The Attack (based on the novel " Das Assentat " by Harry Mulisch ), which won an Oscar in 1986 for best foreign language film .

In 1989, Soeteman was awarded the Golden Calf Film Prize for his work .
