Martin Koolhoven

Martin Koolhoven (born April 25, 1969 in The Hague , Netherlands ) is a film director , screenwriter and actor .

Professional career

Koolhoven attended two film schools, one in the Netherlands and one in Belgium, and later switched to the Dutch Film And Television Academy .

He started with the short film Chess in 1993 and made another short film two years later with the title Koekoek! .

In 1996 he released the short film De Orde Der Dingen , which was also his thesis at the Dutch Film Academy. The first film after graduating the Dutch Film Academy was in 1997 nominated for the Dutch prize "Golden Calf" movie light Duister , which two years later (1999) the TV film Suzy Q followed.

His movie debut was the 2001 film AmnesiA .

Internationally he became known in 2005 through the film Schnitzelparadies (Dutch: Het schnitzelparadijs ), which appeared in the international version as Schnitzel Paradise . The film was awarded a Golden Calf at the Dutch Film Festival, Best Screenplay at the Skip City International D-Cinema Festival and in the “Comedy Film Honor” and “Film Discovery Jury Award” categories at the US Comedy Arts Festival .

In the same year the film Knetter was also released , which was shown in German cinemas under the title Crazy and internationally under Bonkers . The film received various national and international film prizes, including the “Audience Award” from the Dutch film festival.

In 2008 he made the feature film Oorlogswinter , which was also known under the English title Winter in Wartime and which was nominated for the 2009 Oscar and Satellite Awards in 2009 . The film has received national and international awards, including the Golden and Platinum Film, Netherlands in the gold and platinum category, as well as prizes at the Dutch Film Festival, the Rembrandt Awards and the Rome Film Fest.

In 2016, he received an invitation to compete at the 73rd Venice Film Festival for the English-language western Brimstone with Dakota Fanning , Guy Pearce , Kit Harington and Carice van Houten in the leading roles .
