Mein Kriegswinter (Original title: Oorlogswinter , also known under the DVD title Winter in Wartime ) is a Dutch-Belgian war drama by the director Martin Koolhoven . It takes place in the last winter of the Second World War during the German occupation in a small village near Zwolle , the capital of the Dutch province of Overijssel and is based on the novel of the same name by Jan Terlouw , published in 1975 .

action

The 14-year-old Dutchman Michiel observed the crash of a British military plane at night and searched the wreck together with a friend for usable parts the next day. They find a wristwatch and a hose, but are noticed by German soldiers, from whom they are fleeing. While his friend and neighbor, Theo Knopper, escapes the soldiers, Michiel is caught by them. His father Johan van Beusekom, the mayor, picks him up from the commandant.

Shortly after this incident, his uncle visits Ben Michiel's family. While his father is worried that he doesn't want any trouble and wants to keep the weak peace in the village, Ben acts like a resistance fighter . In the period that followed, Ben and Michiel's father often had discussions about the Dutch resistance.

Shortly before the attack on an ammunition dump, Theo's brother, Dirk, gives Michiel an envelope to give to the village blacksmith in case Dirk does not come back after the attack. As Dirk is arrested, Michiel wants to hand Dirk's envelope over to the blacksmith, Bertus van Gelder, but watches the blacksmith being shot by soldiers while trying to escape. Michiel opens the letter and finds a hint that it is about 60 meters east of the old hunter's hut. Then he sets off and meets the British pilot Jack, hidden in an underground cave. Michiel learns that Jack was able to parachute himself out of the Mosquito machine, which he was watching, in time. With Jack injured, Michiel decides to bypass his father and uncle's instructions to stay away from the resistance and to help the pilot.

Jack wants to go to Zwolle because he has the opportunity to return to England from there. However, since Jack is injured, Michiel takes care of him with the help of his sister Erica, a nurse. The subsequent attempt to get Jack to safety fails.

Since a German soldier who was killed by Jack has been found in the forest in the meantime, the occupying forces scour the forest for traces of the perpetrator. In addition, Michiel's father is taken into custody by the German soldiers. When Michiel visits Jack in his hiding place, his sister is already with Jack and reports on the planned execution of her father, as the occupiers want to make an example of the murder of the German soldier.

In the evening, Ben reported that Michiel's father would be released the next day, but that was not the case. Instead, Michiel witnesses his father and two other civilians being executed.

Another attempt to bring Jack to safety by means of a ferry fails again, so that Michiel and Jack flee with a carriage. However, they are pursued by soldiers with carts of motorcycles . Since they are too slow with the carriage, they both climb onto the horse, relieve the carriage and thus escape.

After Michiel has informed Ben about the English pilot, he wants to take care of everything else and two days later he sets off to Zwolle with Jack and Erika, who have both started a love affair. Since they have to cross a bridge controlled by the occupiers, Jack is said to be passed off as a patient.

While saying goodbye to Jack, Michiel realizes that Ben knew things about Dirk that he could only have learned by eavesdropping on conversations, as Michiel had never spoken to Ben about Dirk. After rummaging through Ben's suitcase, he sees his suspicion that Ben is a collaborator as confirmed and pursues his uncle, Jack and Erika. After confronting Ben, Erika and Jack set off alone to cross the bridge.

While Ben is tied to a tree, Michiel watches his sister cross the bridge and Jack shimmy under the bridge towards the other bank. Jack falls into the river, but can reach the other bank unmolested. Ben was able to free himself from the shackles unnoticed and takes flight, but is caught by Michiel. When Ben feels safe that there is a military convoy nearby, he makes his way there, but is shot from behind by Michiel.

After the end of the war there is a celebration in Michiel's village. While his sister is happy to receive mail from Jack, Michiel stays at home. Later he plays with his friend Theo with the hose they took from the crashed English machine.

Subplot

Two Jewish women and their daughters appear in subplots. The first mother with daughter is introduced to Michiel as "Aunt Cora" when they find shelter with Michiel's family for a short time. He meets the second one when he takes Jack home with him to hide him there. This mother and daughter have found shelter with Schachter, a supposed occupation collaborator.
