Pino Donaggio

Pino Donaggio (born November 24, 1941 in Burano , Veneto ) is an Italian composer .

Life

Pino Donaggio, whose father and grandfather were also musicians, graduated from the Conservatory in Milan in violin, after which he studied composition. After completing his studies, he became director of the Conservatorio Benedetto Marcello in Venice .

With his compositions he achieved world fame and became one of the most famous songwriters in Italy. He performed his song Io che non vivo (senza te) with a text by Vito Pallavicini as a singer at the Sanremo Festival in 1965 . The song sold over 55 million copies and was covered by Elvis Presley and Dusty Springfield , among others, under the title You Don't Have to Say You Love Me .

His career as a film composer began in 1973 when the producer Ugo Mariotti asked him if he would like to write the music for his film When the Gondolas Bear Mourning . Donaggio accepted the offer and the score was a success. A long collaboration with Brian De Palma began with the soundtrack for the film Carrie - Des Satan's Youngest Daughter . With the film music for Carrie , Pino Donaggio established himself as a film composer.

Donaggio often regretted that he had retained his residence in Italy. Many orders from the United States have been lost to him.
