Rendezvous with a corpse (original title: Appointment with Death) is an American film by Michael Winner based on the crime novel Death is waiting by Agatha Christie . Peter Ustinov played Hercule Poirot in it , whom he had already embodied in Death on the Nile and Evil Under the Sun.
action
1937: Emille Boynton, a former director of a US prison who got rich, died after changing his will shortly before; his fortune is said to be evenly distributed between his second wife, Emily Boynton, a former jailer at Boynton's prison, and the children. The widow Emily succeeds in blackmailing the family lawyer to burn the will. As a result, the original will becomes valid again, according to which the property falls to the widow alone. At the request of the tyrannical widow, the family, which - in addition to their own child - also includes stepchildren from a previous marriage of the deceased and already a daughter-in-law, goes on a trip that takes them first to Europe and then to British-ruled Palestine.
The lawyer, who has an affair with Emily's daughter-in-law, travels to join the family. On the crossing, during which other travelers also get into the circle of the Boynton family, Emily tries to poison him - the only one who shares her secret about the inheritance - with her heart drops, but it fails.
Hercule Poirot is also traveling on vacation to Palestine on this ship. Common acquaintances and other coincidences lead to a conversation and visit the excavations near Qumran on the Dead Sea. There Mrs. Boynton, sitting in front of a tent, falls victim to an assassination attempt. Hercule Poirot begins the investigation and gradually all family members come under suspicion.
Lady Westholme, an American who was married to England and became a member of Parliament, was found to be the murderer. She had been in prison in America and was now recognized and blackmailed by Mrs. Boynton.
background
The underlying book, on which a large part of the setting is based, was written before the Second World War. The ruins of the then British-controlled Petra , which is now part of Jordan , were viewed when the murder occurred. This location was not available to the Israeli film team in 1988 for political reasons, so the story was moved to Qumran.
The excavations in the 1937 film are not the ones that made the Qumran site famous. The scrolls were not found in caves above Qumran until 1947, and excavation work did not begin until 1951.
In 2008 the novel was remade in the series Agatha Christie's Poirot under the title Death awaits with David Suchet in the leading role.
Reviews

The conclusion was: “Conventional entertainment cinema without a bite.” Cinema expressed itself similarly: “The boat and the story bob lazily along.” Prisma praised the main actor Ustinov, who as “world-famous [s] all- rounder [...] his role with incomparable, fine irony "embody.
