Piper Laurie (born January 22, 1932 in Detroit , Michigan ; actually Rosetta Jacobs ) is an American actress .

biography

Her parents were a Polish immigrant and his Russian-American wife. She moved to Los Angeles with them at the age of six . She attended an acting school there and signed a contract with Universal Studios at the age of 17 , which also gave her the stage name Piper Laurie . Her first film was 1950 Age Doesn't Protect From Love ( Louisa ), which starred Ronald Reagan .

Piper Laurie then played leading roles in intellectually undemanding universal films, mostly comedies or adventure films, alongside Rock Hudson and Tony Curtis , among others . At Universal, she was mainly cast in roles as the innocent girl next door. In 1955 she moved to New York , dissatisfied with the roles offered to her in Hollywood . She played there in television performances of classical stage plays (for example, in Was ihr wollt by William Shakespeare ), which were broadcast live in series such as The Hallmark Hall of Fame or Playhouse 90 . In 1961 she returned to Hollywood to play the female lead in the Robert Rossen film Sharks of the Big City ( The Hustler ) as the lover of Paul Newman . For this role she was nominated for an Oscar for best actress.

Despite this success, the major role offers in Hollywood then failed to materialize. She moved to Woodstock , New York , with her husband, Joe Morgenstern . In the following time she played mainly in the theater and occasionally on television. In 1976 Laurie made another comeback in Hollywood when she played the fanatically religious mother of the title character in Carrie , Brian De Palma's adaptation of Stephen King's novel Carrie . Her portrayal was rewarded with another Oscar nomination, this time in the Best Supporting Actress category . A third Oscar nomination, again for Best Supporting Actress, she was awarded in 1987 for her role in Children of a Lesser God ( Children of a Lesser God ).

In 1987 she received the Emmy for best supporting actress in a television film for her appearance in the television film Promise alongside James Garner . In David Lynch's television series Twin Peaks (1990-1991) she played the scheming Catherine Martell , which earned her two Emmy nominations, both for best actress and as best supporting actress. She also won a Golden Globe Award for this role in 1991 . Laurie continues to play roles in the cinema and television, and has mainly worked in independent films since the 2000s .
