action

The architect Hal Norton returns home. He is laden with gifts for the family as he celebrates his calling to be vice president of his company. His wife Meg, his son Chris and his daughter Cathy greet him sadly. Meg tells him that Hals' mother Louisa, who also lives in the house, is the reason for the bad mood. Before Hal's return, she alienated the grocer with a complaint. Hal suggests his mother move her somewhere else in a nice place.

The next morning, the injured Louisa wants to go to a meeting in a care unit. On the way there she apologizes to Henry Hammond, the dealer. The two chat and confirm to each other that old age is difficult. Louisa and Henry begin a secret romance. One evening Cathy sees them in a movie theater and rushes home to tell the family. Hal is shocked and waits for his mother, who admits that Henry proposed to her.

Hal is so upset that his work suffers. His boss, Abel Burnside, sends him home early. That evening Henry comes to the Nortons for dinner. Henry is charming and gets along with everyone, including Cathy's boyfriend Jimmy Blake. Only Hal is skeptical. At the table, Henry repeats his request, but before Louisa can respond, Burnside shows up with the message that Hal's project will be canceled immediately. Burnside is immediately impressed by Louisa, who flirts with him a little. The jealous Henry leaves the house. The rest of the weekend, Louisa is courted by Burnside, but she keeps thinking of Henry. At a dance event, Louisa and Burnside win a dance competition. When Burnside defeats Henry in a wrestling match, Louisa rushes to Henry's home while Burnside drives back to town.

The following Monday, Burnside confronts Hal with a report on Henry accusing him of bigamy. Louisa does not want to believe the report. Hal doesn't want her to see Henry again, but Louisa runs away. Hal notifies the police. Burnside later visits the Nortons when Jimmy Blake reports that he saw a woman in a window of Henry's apartment. Everyone rushes to the apartment, where it turns out that Louisa is actually there. Henry explains that all four women he is supposedly married to are the same person. He and his first wife were so deeply in love that they decided to remarry every ten years until she passed away. Now Hal is also convinced that Louisa has found the right man. All of her friends and family witness the wedding between Henry and Louisa.
