Spring Byington
Spring Byington (born October 17, 1886 in Colorado Springs , Colorado , † September 7, 1971 in Hollywood , California ) was an American actress .
Life
After her father's sudden death in 1891, Spring Byington and her younger sister first grew up with their grandparents in Port Hope, Canada, while their mother began studying medicine in Boston. At the age of 14 she began working as a professional actress for traveling theater groups. In 1907 Byington went to New York . She began touring the United States with various plays and received her first role on Broadway in Beggar on Horseback in 1924 and played in 18 other productions by 1935.
She first came to Hollywood in 1930. Three years later she was the mother of Katharine Hepburn in the literary film adaptation of Louisa May Alcott 's novel Four Sisters . This was followed by roles in the films The Werewolf of London , Mutiny on the Bounty and Time of Love, Time of Farewell . In 1938 she was nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Frank Capra's Life Artist , but lost to Fay Bainter in Jezebel - The Malicious Lady , in which Byington also starred. In the films of the 1930s and 1940s, Byington often played the warm-hearted and wise mother, aunt, neighbor or friend of the main character; she was almost never seen in unsympathetic roles.
She worked in the radio during WWII and returned to Hollywood after the war. From 1954 to 1959 she starred in the hit sitcom December Bride , where she played a fun-loving widow in search of a new love. This leading role brought the fame of Byington, who was usually only a supporting actress in films, to its climax. From 1961 to 1963 she was in the western series At the foot of the blue mountains in the role of Daisy Taylor . She had one of her last roles in 1967 as the mother of Larry Hagman in the television series The Charming Jeannie .
On September 7, 1971, she died of cancer and made her body available to science. She was given two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame .
