Jezebel - The Malicious Lady (Original title: Jezebel ) is an American film drama directed by William Wyler from 1938 with Bette Davis and Henry Fonda in the lead roles.

action

New Orleans in 1852: Julie, a wealthy southerner, likes to challenge members of society in a way that deliberately breaks with prevailing conventions. She also provokes her fiancé Preston, who cannot prevail against her behavior. Julie arrives late and in a riding dress for a party held in her house; When the bank clerk Preston cannot accompany her to her seamstress because he has an important meeting, she goes to the bank - improperly for a woman - to confront him. When she finally wears a red dress at the traditional Olympus ball, although this is the color of the prostitutes and unmarried women traditionally wear the color white, Preston breaks up with her. He leaves the city and goes to New York on business.

A year later, yellow fever broke out in New Orleans . Julie has deeply regretted her behavior towards Preston, barely left her house for the past year and avoided all company. When she learns Preston will be returning to New Orleans in the next few days, she blossoms. She wants to ask his forgiveness and is already imagining the wedding together. However, at the festival given on the occasion of his return, Preston appears with his wife Amy. Julie tries to keep her composure and after a short time begins to forge schemes against "the little Yankee ". As a result, Preston's brother challenges their mutual friend Buck to a duel, who - incited by Julie - has spoken badly about Amy. Buck is killed in a duel, which leads Aunt Belle to hurl Julie contemptuously at " Jezebel " because she tends to be wicked despite her angelic appearance.

Preston didn't notice the duel because he had to drive to downtown New Orleans on business. He collapses in a bar - he has yellow fever. Dr. Livingstone takes him to Julie's town house and informs Julie's company who are in the country house outside of town. There is a risk that Preston will be taken to the so-called Leprosy Island, where the yellow fever sufferers are isolated for fear of infection. His chances of survival would be extremely slim. Since the city is cordoned off, Julie sneaks a detour to Preston and takes care of him. Society doesn't come to them until later, when Dr. Livingstone has already reported Preston to the authorities as ill. Amy asks to be allowed to go to the island with Preston to nurse him back to health. However, Julie knows that she alone is strong enough to save Preston on the island. She knows people and their kind and she wants to make atonement. Amy realizes that although she is the woman Preston loves, she is not strong enough to save him, so Julie goes to the island with Preston.

Individual evidence

  1. Around 1850 it was not yet known that yellow fever is not contagious but that it is transmitted by mosquitoes. The film shows that Preston is bitten by a mosquito in Julie's garden and kills it.
