Larry Martin Hagman (born September 21, 1931 in Fort Worth , Texas , † November 23, 2012 in Dallas , Texas) was an American actor . He became world-famous for the role of Major Nelson in the television series The Charming Jeannie , and the role of John Ross "J. R. “Ewing in the television saga Dallas .

Life

Larry Hagman, son of the well-known Broadway actress Mary Martin , became internationally known for his roles in the television series The Charming Jeannie (as astronaut Tony Nelson) and between 1978 and 1991 in the family saga Dallas . In this he played the ruthless Texan oil baron J. R. Ewing, who forged intrigues against his brother and betrayed his wife. It became the role of his life and by his own admission it was the best thing he has ever done in life. Dallas is still the most successful television series and Hagman is the crowd puller. 300 million people are said to have watched Hagman gunned down in a cliffhanger as J.R. on television. This role never let him go; in public he was identified almost exclusively with J. R. Ewing.

He played, among other things, in the film First Victory with John Wayne and Kirk Douglas in the leading roles in 1965, in 1966 in The Clique with Candice Bergen and Hal Holbrook and in 1976 in The Eagle Has Landed with Donald Sutherland and Michael Caine . In the 1978 film O'Malley, Please Report , he played O'Malley, a policeman with leukemia. As a hotel guest he appeared in the successful series Ein Schloß am Wörthersee in 1991 . He also starred in the 1997 television film The Third Twin with Kelly McGillis and Kenneth Welsh . In 1995 he had a supporting role as an oil multinational in Oliver Stone's feature film Nixon . In 2006, Larry Hagman was the surprise star in an episode of Lindenstrasse in which he booked a flight to Dallas at a travel agency. He also had a role in the hit series Nip / Tuck and in 2011 a guest appearance on Desperate Housewives as the new stepfather of Lynette Scavo ( Felicity Huffman ).

As a result of his longstanding alcohol dependence , he had a liver transplant in 1995 , which according to media reports had to be partially removed again at the end of 2003. Hagman and his wife Maj were politically and socially committed, for example for organ donations and, since the power failure on August 14, 2003, which paralyzed the entire east coast of the USA and parts of Canada, for an energy turnaround - Hagman as the "front man of the American solar scene". He was considered a critic of the former US President George W. Bush . Since the 1960s he was a member of the left-wing alternative Peace and Freedom Party .

In 1987 Hagman released the video Stop Smoking for Life , which is said to help people quit smoking . All profits were donated to the American Cancer Society . In 2010 he shot several commercials for the German solar company SolarWorld under director Sönke Wortmann , which were initially broadcast in the United States.

As previously in The Charming Jeannie , he met Barbara Eden again in five Dallas episodes in 1991 .

On October 1, 2010, Hagman was a surprise guest at the start of the official flooding of Lake Phoenix in Dortmund. In 2011, along with Karima el-Mahroug and Zachi Noy, he was one of Richard Lugner's guests at the Vienna Opera Ball . At the final event of the SPD before the election to the House of Representatives in 2011 , he was present as a supporter of Klaus Wowereit on the stage at Potsdamer Platz. In the same year, together with a representative of DEKRA, at the 50th award ceremony of the Grand Prize for Medium-Sized Enterprises of the Oskar Patzelt Foundation, he presented the certificate for the ISO certification of the quality management system of this competition.

Hagman was also active as a director. In 1967 he made his directorial debut and staged three episodes of the series The Charming Jeannie . In the years 1971/1972, two episodes of the series A glorious life followed . In 1972 he shot his only feature film, Der Blob ( Beware! The Blob ). It is a sequel to Blob from 1958. Hagman also appeared as a director at Dallas and staged more than 30 episodes from 1979 to 1991. His last directorial work dates from 1992 to 1994. During this time he participated in the series In der Wärme der Nacht .

In 2011, Hagman contracted throat cancer , according to the press release in a "very common and easily treatable form". He died of cancer on November 23, 2012 at Medical City Dallas Hospital. Shortly before that he had appeared again as J. R. Ewing in the new edition of Dallas . Despite the cancer, his death came as a surprise to the public, mainly because of his continued public presence. At his request, he was cremated and the ashes scattered around the Southfork Ranch area .

Hagman had two children. He was married to his wife Maj (1928-2016), who last had Alzheimer's disease, from 1954 until his death for 58 years. He lived on a farm in Ojai , Ventura County, northwest of Los Angeles .

In his two best-known roles in Germany as Tony Nelson in Bewitching Jeannie and as JR Ewing in Dallas , Hagman was played by Gig Malzacher (ZDF-Synchro of Bewitching Jeannie ), Berno von Cramm (Sat.1-Synchro of Bewitching Jeannie ) and by Wolfgang Pampel (including Dallas and Ein Schloß am Wörthersee ) spoken; From the early 80s, Pampel also became Hagmann's regular speaker in the cinema.
