The American Cancer Society (ACS) is a medical organization founded in the United States in 1913 . According to its own account, it is a "national, community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, reducing the suffering of cancer through research, education, defense and commitment. "The association, based in Atlanta has branches in all 50 states and Puerto Rico in more than 3,400 local offices.

The society was founded in 1913 as the American Society for the Control of Cancer (ASCC) by 15 medical professionals and businessmen in New York City . It adopted its current name in 1945 .

Activities include providing grants to researchers, running public health campaigns, and organizing the Great American Smokeout .
