Southfork Ranch

The Southfork Ranch is a ranch about 40 km north of Dallas near the Texas town Parker . The ranch was built in 1970 by the farmer Joe R. Duncan and was originally called Duncan Acres . She became known worldwide in the 1980s in connection with the filming of the American television series Dallas , in which the ranch served as the ancestral home of the Ewing family portrayed.

When the production company Lorimar decided to continue the series after the success of the first season of Dallas in 1978, the owner of the Cloyce Box Ranch, where the first five episodes were filmed, refused to use it. When looking for a replacement location, Duncan's property was chosen, as the whitewashed manor house was similar to the original location. The Southfork Ranch served Lorimar for all outdoor photography until 1989. Then all production was relocated to Lorimar Studios in California . Production only returned to the ranch for the two television films JR Returns and Fight to the Knife , which were filmed five and seven years after the series was discontinued.

The original owner, Duncan, lived with his family on the ranch when filming began. However, the worldwide success of the series made the house a popular tourist attraction. Because of the associated privacy restrictions, Duncan eventually moved away and set up a museum for the television series on the ranch in 1985 . In June 1992 the businessman Rex Maughan acquired the site and has since operated it as an event and conference center .
