production
The series is based on the 1970 television film House on Greenapple Road by director Robert Day . The roles of Dan Oakland, Sgt. Wilentz and Chief Untermeyer were played by Christopher George , Barry Sullivan and Keenan Wynn . Originally shot for the cinema, the film was cut by 30 minutes and broadcast directly on television on ABC .
The series was discontinued after a season due to insufficient audience ratings . After Burt Reynolds made the breakthrough to star with Everyone Who Will Die , the series was repeated a number of times with success.
reception
Dan Oakland , while not getting enough viewer interest for a second season, became a repeat fan favorite, especially after Reynolds gained popularity with his burgeoning film career in the mid-1970s. CBS aired the series to larger audiences on both The CBS Late Movie and prime-time during the summer of 1973 and 1975.
