Arnold Laven

Arnold Laven (born February 23, 1922 in Chicago , Illinois , † September 13, 2009 in Tarzana , Los Angeles , California ) was an American director , screenwriter and producer . He has directed over 70 productions for film and television. Including for movies like Anna Lucasta , The Glorious Horsemen , When Jim Dolan Came, or for the western comedy Sam Whiskey .

life and work

Arnold Laven was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1922 and moved to Los Angeles with his family in the late 1930s . He began his career in the entertainment industry in the mail room at Warner Bros.

During World War II , Laven was assigned to the US Army Air Forces First Motion Picture Unit. Laven described the First Motion Picture Unit as "The best film school in the world" because the participants got to know all aspects of the film industry .

In September 1951 Laven founded his own production company with Jules V. Levy and Arthur Gardner . The company opened offices at Goldwyn Studios and announced its first feature films. Crime films , war dramas , productions in the field of science fiction and some psychological thrillers of the harder kind were soon made during the 1950s . Various Western formats followed in the 1960s, such as the Indian drama The Last Command from 1962 with Chuck Connors and in 1965 the portrait of the US cavalry in The Glorious Horsemen with the cast Tom Tryon , Harve Presnell , Senta Berger and James Caan . In 1967 Laven directed the Noble Westerns When Jim Dolan came with Dean Martin and George Peppard and in 1969 the western comedy Sam Whiskey followed with Burt Reynolds , Clint Walker and Ossie Davis in the leading roles.

Arnold Laven also directed dozens of episodes from well-known television series in his long career , including episodes from Westlich von Santa Fé (21 episodes), Mannix (eight episodes), The Greatest American Hero (seven episodes), Das A-Team (six Episodes), Big Valley (six episodes), The Secrets of Isis (six episodes), Hill Street Police Station (three episodes), The Six Million Dollar Man (three episodes), Planet of the Apes (three episodes), Fantasy Iceland (two episodes), Detective Rockford - Just give us a call (two episodes), Make-up and Guns (two episodes), Der Chef (two episodes) and CHiPs (two episodes).

Laven died on September 13, 2009 in Tarzana, California at the age of 87.
