The book deals with the problems of genetic research and cloning . The main role is played by an assistant professor who tries to find twins who grew up separately and know nothing of each other, in order to find out whether and to what extent a person's character is genetically predetermined or whether the environment in which one grows up plays a more decisive role plays.

Here she meets a young man who has a twin who is unknown to him and who is in prison.

In the course of time, as the research proceeds, the two realize that there are not just two, but eight "twins". However, these are only multiples in the biological sense, as they have been cloned.
