Kelly McGillis
Kelly McGillis (born July 9, 1957 in Newport Beach , California ) is an American actress . She was best known for the leading roles in The Only Witness (alongside Harrison Ford ) and Top Gun (alongside Tom Cruise ).
Life
Kelly McGillis is the daughter of doctor Donald McGillis and his wife Joan, b. Snell. In 1982 she was raped by two men who broke into her apartment. As a result of this experience, she played the role of prosecutor in Defendant in 1988 . Group rape is the subject of the film.
In 1983 McGillis played a leading role in her first film Ruben, Ruben alongside Tom Conti. In the film The Sole Witness (1985), she played Rachel Lapp , who belongs to the Amish and is protected by police officer John Book ( Harrison Ford ). For this role she was nominated for a Golden Globe and a BAFTA Award in 1986. From the Amish side, however, she was heavily criticized because, in order to prepare well for the role, she had gained access to an Amish family under false pretenses. Her best-known role was as the friend of the aviator Maverick (played by Tom Cruise ) in Top Gun (1986).
McGillis was married to Boyd Black and Fred Tillman. She has two daughters and lives in Pennsylvania . In 2009 she said in an interview that she was a lesbian and that her next life partner would surely be a woman.
In September 2010, McGillis married her partner Melanie Leis, lived with her in Collingswood and worked as a caregiver for alcohol and drug addicts in Bridgeton, New Jersey . The marriage was divorced a year later.
McGillis lives in Hendersonville, North Carolina and teaches acting at The New York Studio for Stage and Screen NYS3 in Asheville, North Carolina.
