The film begins at the Storm Research Institute in Norman , Oklahoma . There an unusual tornado is discovered near Laporte. The meteorologist Jamie will examine this on site. Due to the high damage, FEMA is also on site with a team and employee Will, who is assigned to her by team leader Wallace, receives her.

First, both of them drive to the scene. Some strange things are noticed while driving. There is a Doppler radar on a mountain , electricity pylons and an experimental field can be seen. It appears that missiles are being tested on the premises . The plant is called Pine Feather and is located in the restricted military area . During the first time, Jamie makes herself unpopular because of her harsh and sometimes arrogant manner. In addition, they have no interest in on-site activities, e.g. B. a memorial service for the storm victims shows what will improve later. She is rescued by Will after she entered the restricted military area and was followed by security. For the time of the investigation, she spent the night on a hill. There are always unusual weather phenomena on this: wind shear where there shouldn't be any and ball lightning and thunderstorms without rain .

To understand the relationship between the plant and the weather, Jamie hacks into Pine Feather's records. Eventually she drives Will to the Storm Research Institute in Oklahoma and speaks to her boss in person. While driving, she talks to Will about the fact that she once lost her husband in a storm. It is also about a possible relationship between the two. Her husband died in a storm in a tornado hunt . Arrived in the center of the storm, the two describe the unusual weather events and learn that Pine Feather is a NASA project .

In order to be able to continue their research, Jamie and Will steal the authorities' investigation vehicle and drive it back to Laporte. On the way, they get caught in a storm system in which several tornadoes arise from a super cell. The vehicle is hit by one, but both can escape under a bridge beforehand . The relationship between Will and Jamie has improved so much that Will asks if they would like to go on vacation together. The bosses are also happy because the vehicle, equipped with cameras, has made a video of the eye of the tornado and the budget of the Institute for Storm Research is being increased.
