James Gordon MacArthur (born December 8, 1937 in Los Angeles , California - † October 28, 2010 in Jacksonville , Florida ) was an American actor .

Life

James MacArthur was the adopted son of Helen Hayes and screenwriter Charles MacArthur . He grew up in Nyack , New York and New Hope , Pennsylvania . Through his parents and his godmother Lillian Gish he came into contact with Harpo Marx , Robert Benchley , John Barrymore and John Steinbeck .

In 1949 he began his acting career at the theater. In 1955, at the age of 18, he played the leading role in the John Frankenheimer- directed episode Deal a Blow from the television series Climax! as well as in the subsequent cinema production under the name The naked face , for which he received a nomination for the British Film Academy Award . He got a contract with Walt Disney Pictures and played the leading role in Kidnapped - The Adventures of David Balfour . His most successful Disney film, however, was Jungle of 1000 Dangers (1960), directed by Ken Annakin , with whom he had already worked on The Third Man in the Mountain . In 1960 he had an engagement on Broadway alongside Jane Fonda .

MacArthur was a guest star on various American television series from the late 1950s , including Bonanza , Smoking Colts, and The People at Shiloh Ranch . After being in the Clint Eastwood - Western Hang 'Em High had played a minor role, he was the producer of the film for a starring role in the series Hawaii Five-O involved. He played the character of Dan Williams , assistant to Steve McGarrett ( Jack Lord ) , in 259 episodes for a total of eleven years . Since leaving the series, he has starred in various television productions and series such as Murder is Her Hobby , Vegas and Fantasy Island .
