Z Nation [ ziːˈneɪʃ (ə) n ] ( ) is an American post-apocalyptic zombie drama series directed by Karl Schaefer from 2014 and produced by The Asylum . The broadcast started on September 12, 2014 on the US television station Syfy , and in Germany on July 29, 2015 on its German branch .
On December 20, 2017, it was announced that a fifth season had been commissioned and aired in 2018. In April 2019, the prequel series Black Summer, developed by Karl Schaefer and John Hyams , was released on Netflix.

During the past three years, a zombie - apocalypse rages, it create some doctors, including Marilyn Merch to produce an experimental vaccine in a research station, which is being tested at three prisoners just before the station is overrun by zombies. In fact, an injection proves to be effective and saves the life of the prisoner "Murphy" despite multiple zombie bites. Because the station and the previous active ingredient are lost, this makes it mankind's most important hope for a vaccine. A team of soldiers, including Mark Hammond, is assigned to bring Murphy from New York City to California so that an antidote can be made in a laboratory using his blood. In the first episode of season one, only Hammond and Murphy are left alive; they encounter a group of survivors who join the mission because their camp has been overrun by zombies. The group is supported remotely by the NSA analyst "Citizen Z", who is the last survivor to hold out at the Northern Light NSA base in Alaska. From there he has absolute control over everything that is connected to the partially functioning Internet. After Hammond is killed at a base overrun by zombies, Roberta, Mack, Addy, Doc, Cassandra, Tommy "10K" (in the German dubbed version "Ten Thousand") and Sgt. Charles Garnett take on the task of getting Murphy alive to California bring.
Along the way, they repeatedly meet survivors of the apocalypse, but not all of them are friendly towards the group. The permanent threat from zombies is also not decreasing. The military bases between New York and California also prove to be unsafe, so the group is forced to move to other accommodations. On the way they are stopped by tornadoes or overrun by hordes of zombies. When one day they find themselves at a nuclear power station, they have to prevent a nuclear disaster threatened by a meltdown. At the same time, they let Murphy fly safely on an airplane. With the help of a former employee of the power plant, the group manages to avert the meltdown; Murphy rejoins them a short time later because the plane has crashed. When the group comes a little later to a settlement in which there are only women, Addy is manipulated by them in such a way that she wants to stay there and the group continues without Addy and her friend Mack, who does not want to leave Addy alone.
A short time later Citizen Z gives them a new location, Fort Collins , Colorado , where a laboratory is located. There he hopes to find merch capable of making a vaccine from Murphy's blood. In the laboratory, however, they only find a large number of corpses and "patient 0" who was infected in the laboratory. Video recordings from before the apocalypse made it clear to the group that there were attempts to make a vaccine back then. Cassandra is badly injured in the laboratory and turned into a zombie by Murphy.
Walter Kurian worked on a bioweapon by investigating all possible epidemics in various countries for three years, and he did not shy away from murder. He has also been wanted by Interpol for selling bioweapons technology to North Korea , Iran and Iraq and for suspicion of developing hypnotics in combat. The virus was released in an accident in the laboratory. When Kurian suddenly appears in the laboratory and pretends to be a helping scientist, Citizen Z can warn the group via computer, whereupon Murphy and the doctor flee. Since Murphy flees the laboratory without decontamination , a NORAD nuclear missile is launched through a safety mechanism , which is aimed at the laboratory in Fort Collins . This triggers a nuclear backlash and the Third World War , in which the NSA base Northern Light and numerous other countries worldwide are targeted.

Shortly before the nuclear missile reaches the NSA base, the missile defense is automatically activated and the missile is destroyed in the air. The members of the group are separated from one another in the course of this. Citizen Z finds himself fighting a horde of zombies, unable to communicate with the others. Meanwhile, Roberta barely escapes death before reuniting with Doc, 10K, Mac and Addy. Together they move to Cheyenne , Wyoming , where they meet Murphy, who has built a zombie strip club there, and Cassandra. There is also a group of bounty hunters waiting there. a. a man named Vasquez hits her and a dispute breaks out over who should bring Murphy to the CDC . In the following shootout, Murphy and Cassandra manage to escape. During the attack by the bounty hunters, each of the remaining group members only more or less escapes death. Vasquez saves Roberta from the other bounty hunters, Mack is bitten in a zombie-infested staircase and shortly afterwards is killed by Addy with a shot in the head after the transformation.
On the escape from Cheyenne, the remaining group members then meet a convoy heading for Edmonton , Alberta , Canada . They join this, but soon encounter the next threat: blasters - radioactive creatures that were created from the explosion of the nuclear bomb. When the convoy is overrun by the blasters , the group has to flee again. Murphy and Cassandra are again separated from their people and headed for a laboratory in Minneapolis , Minnesota with a survivor of the convoy .
Murphy and Cassandra arrive at a greenhouse infested with zombie-plant hybrids, where they are asked to procure a sample of the 47th batch of a marijuana- based drug called Batch47 , which could serve as a cure for the zombie virus, for the leader of the group at the Minneapolis laboratory . After none of the volunteers who went to the greenhouse returned, Murphy eventually managed to use his telepathic skills to get a sample from Batch47 . When they test the substance on a decapitated corpse, everything indicates that Batch47 really works. In the end, however, it turns out that the supposed antivirus works just like the original one and turns people into zombies. Meanwhile Citizen Z can get in touch with the team again and wants to send Addy the coordinates for the CDC laboratory , but a disruption in the communication transmission causes Addy to write down the wrong coordinates. As Cassandra and Murphy make their way back to the lab, they meet Serena, a girl who is pregnant with Murphy's unborn child.
The group, now reunited, goes to a Mennonite settlement where Serena gives birth to a healthy girl. There Addy and 10K become infected with anthrax , which means that Roberta has to relieve the very helpful Mennonites of their antibiotics in order to save the two infected. When the group is attacked again by a horde of zombies, Serena suffers a bite and has to be redeemed by Roberta.
In Springfield , Illinois , Murphy again separates from the others, including the newborn, for fear that it might be killed. Roberta then looks for Vasquez after he has disappeared without a trace. After an attack by the undead, the two wounded escape to an abandoned hospital, where Vasquez says he is still looking for the man who murdered his family. Murphy, however, asks Cassandra to get the others to leave him alone and not to look for him. A heated argument develops in the course of which 10K is forced to kill Cassandra. Murphy encounters a couple in a completely isolated house, bites them both, and eventually leaves the infected to his daughter before returning to the group.
Now it should go over the Mississippi towards Memphis , Tennessee . The boat is attacked by zombies, 10K falls into the water and is separated from the others. While searching for the others, he meets two men, Sketchy and Skeezy, who want to help him find his companions again. During their search they come across a group of survivors, 10K befriends a resident. When the leader Escorpion tries to condemn her to death by hanging out of a misunderstanding, 10K's new friend saves her from execution when she shows up with the rest of the group - 10K had given her a possible meeting place earlier. For his part, Murphy is once again separated from the group when he falls into the trap of a zombie collector. This forces him to tell him his full story that made him the creature he is now. 10K eventually tracks down Murphy in a small town, but is also captured by the collector. However, both are ultimately saved by the group.
Near Roswell , New Mexico , the group tracks down a completely isolated settlement led by a woman named Bernadette who claims to be in contact with aliens. Based on this, 10K suspects that there may be equipment in their underground base that could allow them to get to the CDC faster. Together with Bernadette, on the way there, they meet a creature that is reminiscent of a zombified alien and kill it. Eventually they come across two other zombie aliens who want to kidnap Bernadette. After severely wounding one of the attackers, it turns out that he is a member of the commune who is wearing a special suit. The man is also the last surviving test pilot of the secret base that was overrun by zombies.
The group moves on and is now 100 miles north of Flagstaff , Arizona . Citizen Z warns them of an approaching horde of Zunamis . When the RV gives up, the survivors are forced to separate again. Murphy, Roberta, Vasquez and Addy meet a group of Indians in a casino. Their leader, Gordon, lures 10K and Doc into a trap and leaves them to their fate. Gordon's sister Ayalla thwarted his plans and saves them. Meanwhile, Roberta helps Citizen Z operate a rocket launcher to take down the last zombie at the base in Alaska. Ayalla asks 10K and Doc to travel with her to warn her father Danny of the impending Zunami horde. Danny in turn sends a squad to his son Gordon, but the Zunami destroy the casino and move towards the cliffs, where Gordon is with his people. Despite the previous murder attempt, Doc decides to help Danny and Ayalla Gordon and use a trick to topple the Zunami horde from the cliff.
The survivors encounter a new group that has holed up in a hotel since the outbreak, led by Gideon, a former manager. While exploring the hotel, Murphy and a member of the hotel group are shot. While passed out, Murphy has a vision and unintentionally lures zombies from locked hotel rooms. When the others try to find out who shot Murphy, a man named Iggy is mistakenly identified as the culprit and isolated. However, the true shooter is still up to mischief and wants to shoot two other survivors, including Doc. Trapped in the main hall, the survivors are now confronted with the zombies from the hotel rooms. In the course of this, the true Sagittarius betrays himself and wants to escape with a woman named Dana, but is shot by a half-transformed zombie. The outcast Iggy returns and shoots Gideon. Both groups split up.
Near the Mexican border, Escorpion saves the group from a line of zombies to meet La Reina, Queen of the Dead . La Reina offers a reward for getting Murphy on the one hand, or a membership in her gang on the other. Everyone agrees and will now follow the Queen of the Dead. During the following celebration for the new members, Vasquez identifies Escorpion as the killer of his family and tries to catch him, but is stopped at the last second by Roberta. Kurian claims to have created an antivirus using Murphy's blood. La Reina selects Vasquez as the guinea pig for the serum.
For her part, Roberta recommends Kurian as the first test object. He is ultimately forced by the queen to inject the cure and then suffers a zombie bite, but survives. La Reina and her followers are all given the cure. After a certain incubation period, everyone who received the serum should be able to be controlled by Murphy's telepathic skills, says Kurian. Escorpion and Vasquez end up having a fight, and Escorpion is captured by La Reina's bodyguards. Kurian attacks Murphy, but is beheaded by Roberta. The group now wants to flee and tries to stop La Reina's henchmen by zombies controlled by Murphy. Escorpion frees himself from captivity and fights Vasquez again. Vasquez pushes Escorpion into a shaft, where he is surrounded by the approaching zombies. The group drives in five cars towards the border with the USA .
In a flashback prologue, Citizen Z recalls how he landed at the North Pole. The others also recap what they did on the day of the outbreak. In the present, Citizen Z feels confronted with a hacker who tries to find Murphy with his help. In a dilapidated house, located under the wrong CDC coordinates, the group meets a woman with a whole arsenal of weapons. Citizen Z tries to warn the survivors but doesn't get through. Meanwhile, a group of amateur bounty hunters arrives at the house and tries to capture Murphy, and 10K is shot in the developing conflict. The unknown woman calls Merch for help, who comes accompanied by a submarine captain. A little later, La Reina arrives with some of her bodyguards, hoping to find Murphy. While Roberta and the rest are equipped with weapons by the woman, Murphy sets off with merch to Zona , a zombie-free island. Merch is also hoping for a chance at a cure through Murphy's blood. In the house Roberta is saved from La Reina by Escorpion, the penitent Escorpion is finally saved as revenge from being finally killed by Vasquez. As a consequence, Vasquez leaves the group. Doc, Addy, Roberta and Escorpion see the ablaze submarine and a lifeboat with which Murphy, Merch and the captain are fleeing on the horizon. Then they are kidnapped by unknown men. 10K's whereabouts are unknown. Murphy's daughter has tea with two zombies in the final scene.
