George RR Martin
George Raymond Richard Martin (born September 20, 1948 in Bayonne , New Jersey ) is an American science fiction , fantasy and horror writer, screenwriter and producer. He lives in Santa Fe , New Mexico .
In 2005, Time Martin's Lev Grossman named "the American Tolkien, " and in 2011 he was placed on the annual Time 100 list of the world's most influential people.
Life
George RR Martin started selling monster stories to neighborhood children for a few pennies at an early age . In middle school he became a comic fan and collector and began writing for amateur fan magazines. His first professional relocated work was the short story The Hero in 1970, which in February 1971 at the magazine Galaxy was released. Also in 1970 he graduated from Northwestern University in Evanston , Illinois , with a bachelor's degree in journalism with summa cum laude . A year later he completed his master's degree .
Martin quickly made a name for himself in the science fiction scene as an author of mostly melancholy subjects. Important stories from his early phase include With Morning Comes Mistfall , his first story, which was nominated for the Hugo Award and the Nebula Awards, And Seven Times Never Kill Man , A Tower of Ashes and A Song for Lya with which he was won his first Hugo .
From 1973 to 1976 he organized several chess tournaments for the Continental Chess Association . From 1976 George Martin taught journalism for two years at Clark College in Dubuque, Iowa. During this time he only wrote on the side, which was only to change in 1979. His childless marriage to Gale Burnick, which he entered into in 1975, also ended that year.
After the publication of his first novels, he tried himself in and for the US film industry from 1986 and became a screenwriter for Twilight Zone at CBS Television . In 1987 he wrote scripts for the successful show Beauty and the Beast , which he also produced from 1988. Some of the scripts were created in collaboration with Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa . However , in 1992 he had little success as an executive producer and writer for Doorways . Those in charge often forced him to rewrite the plots he had designed, which frustrated him. Between 1987 and 1993, as editor and co-author, he oversaw a large part of the individual wild card books (a shared world series by various authors with strong echoes of the superhero genre).
In 1996 the first volume of his highly acclaimed fantasy epic Das Lied von Eis und Feuer (orig. A Song of Ice and Fire ), which Martin completed the fifth volume in 2011 , was published first on three, then on six and now on seven novels , which reached # 1 on the New York Times' and Wall Street Journal's bestseller lists shortly after its publication . Due to their enormous size, the books in the series are divided into several (in Germany two) volumes per book in many countries. The HBO television series Game of Thrones , based on the book series, was broadcast from 2011 to 2019 .
Martin is a castle fan; When he spent four weeks in Germany in 2000, he visited numerous places with very old buildings, including Rothenburg ob der Tauber , Nördlingen and Neuschwanstein Castle .
He is a member of the Science Fiction Writers of America (SFWA), whose South-Central Regional Director he was from 1977 to 1979 and whose Vice-President he was from 1996 to 1998. He is also a member of the Horror Writers of America (HWA) and the Writers' Guild of America .
On February 15, 2011, Martin married his longtime girlfriend, Parris McBride. The wedding took place on a small scale at Martin's home in New Mexico.
In 2019 it was announced that it would participate in the development of the Elden Ring video game .
