Kate Wilhelm

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Katie "Kate" Gertrude Meredith Wilhelm (* 8. June 1928 in Toledo , Ohio , † 8. March 2018 in Eugene , Oregon ) was an American science fiction - and fantasy - writer .

Life

Kate Wilhelm was the daughter of mill farmer Jesse Meredith and his wife Ann, worked as a saleswoman, model and operator after high school , before she married Joseph Wilhelm at the age of 19 and had two sons. In 1962 she divorced after fifteen years of marriage and was married from 1963 (until his death in 2002) to the author and editor Damon Knight , with whom she had another child. She lived in Eugene, Oregon where she died in March 2018 at the age of 89.

When she began writing science fiction stories in 1956, she was able to sell one of her short stories that same year : The Pint-Sized Genie was printed in the October issue of Fantastic magazine . In the stories and novels that follow, their typical themes and motifs slowly emerge. While The Clone (1965) was still a novel in which all characters are gradually eaten by the monster before they can become characters, The Nevermore Affair (1966) is already about preventing the military abuse of an elixir of longevity, and In The Killer Thing , a super soldier of the future realizes that he is hardly better than the combat robot he has to fight against on a desert planet, and he destroys the robot so that this technology does not fall into the hands of his commanders. Kate Wilhelm made a name for herself more and more as a representative of a less technical, psychologically founded science fiction; in Margaret And I , her deeply unhappy protagonist transitions into another, better reality, while in Where Late The Sweet Birds Sang she portrays a gloomy world beyond the ultimate ecological catastrophe. Her later works gradually left science fiction, for example when Kate Wilhelm describes in A Sense Of Shadow (1981) how a tyrannical father tries to rule his family after his death and never clearly states whether it is actually obsession or but psychological pressure that ultimately drives one of the characters to suicide.

Her numerous stories have been published in all major American science fiction anthology series, but also in magazines such as Cosmopolitan .

From 1991 on, she turned to a series of lawyer novels that revolved around her character Barbara Holloway ; this series has not yet been translated into German .
