Mühlenbauer is an old handicraft occupation that was still a training occupation in the Federal Republic of Germany in the 1950s before it was merged with the mechanical engineer during the reorganization . Mill builders were involved in the construction and maintenance of mills .

The mill builder worked with wood, stone and iron. A frequent job with stone was the re-sharpening of millstones with the millbille , a hammer, as part of maintenance work. The mill builder also frequently had to deal with wood, for example when creating the water wheel shaft , drive and interior fittings for the mill. For this reason, the profession was often carried out by carpenters . Metal parts were used for shafts and fittings.
