production
development
On July 19, 2018, it was reported that Netflix had commissioned a "spin-off" prequel series for Syfy's Z Nation called Black Summer . The series was the co-creator and executive producer of Z Nation , Karl Schaefer , along with the co-producers of the parent series, John Hyams , designed. Schaefer and Hyams also serve as showrunners for the prequel series.
Connection to Z Nation
The connection between Black Summer and Z Nation will take a similar approach as the relationship between Fear the Walking Dead and The Walking Dead , as there is no plan for any of the Z Nation characters to appear in the prequel series. Z Nation actor DJ Qualls revealed at San Diego Comic-Con that the Syfy series is "pretty long" after the events of Black Summer , which makes him feel the cast is "too old" to be a crossover could work. However, the two series share "most of their typing, directing and production staff" as well as the production company The Asylum .
Leading actress Jaime King claimed the series had no connection with Z Nation and was therefore a stand-alone show.
