DJ Qualls
Donald Joseph "DJ" Qualls (born June 10, 1978 in Nashville , Tennessee ) is an American actor .
life and career
Donald Joseph Qualls grew up in Manchester , Tennessee as one of five siblings. At the age of 14 he fell ill with Hodgkin's disease , a form of lymph node cancer . After two years of treatment, his disease is considered prematurely inactive (remission), but not completely cured. After studying at the University of London , he returned to his hometown and worked there in a law firm. During this time he started acting in a local theater and was discovered by photographers David LaChapelle and Steve Klein . In the following years, DJ Qualls modeled for Prada, among others .
He made his film debut in an extra role in 1995 in The Chaos Clique on a Class Trip from the National Lampoon film series. In 1998 he starred in the TV movie Mama Flora's Family based on a novel by Alex Haley . Qualls had his first major role in Road Trip in 2000 as Kyle Edwards . Two years later he got the lead role as Dizzy / Gil in the comedy The New Guy . In 2003 he was seen alongside Hollywood star Hilary Swank in the movie The Core .
For Hustle & Flow from 2005, Qualls and the ensemble received nominations for the Black Reel Award 2006 and the Screen Actors Guild Award 2006 . In addition, Qualls had guest appearances in various television series , for example in Scrubs in 2002 or in Monk in 2006 . In 2007 he appeared in three episodes of the comedy My Name Is Earl . Since 2011 he has made several guest appearances in Supernatural as Garth.
He starred alongside Nikki Reed in the 2009 drama Last Day of Summer . From 2010 Qualls was in the TNT crime series Memphis Beat in both seasons as Police Officer Davey Sutton to the regular cast .
In addition to his acting career, he is involved in cancer research projects.
In January 2020, he came out as gay on a Jim Jefferies show (and shortly afterwards on Twitter).
