National Lampoon

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

National Lampoon was an American satirical magazine that was first published in 1970. From 1978 film comedies were also shot under the name , including I believe a horse kicks me and The shrill four on the move .

history

The magazine was published by Harvard students Douglas Kenney, Henry Beard and Robert Hoffman under the name Harvard Lampoon at the university since 1969 . The magazine's popularity peaked in the mid-1970s, with the October 1974 issue reaching a circulation of over a million copies. Edward Gorey , Frank Frazetta , Frank Springer and Boris Vallejo worked as illustrators .

Between 1973 and 1974 there was also a radio show called The National Lampoon Radio Hour , in which John Belushi , Bill Murray and Chevy Chase appeared, among others . Excerpts from these shows are available on CD. At the same time, Belushi, Chase and Christopher Guest starred in the off-Broadway production National Lampoon's Lemmings , which was performed at the Village Gate Theater in New York City until 1974 .

In 1975 the three founders sold their shares. The first feature film to be released under the brand name I believe a horse kicks me became one of the most successful film comedies of its time in 1978 and was the breakthrough for film director John Landis . During the 1980s there were still successful feature films under the name ( Help, the Americans are coming and Help, it's very Christmassy ), but sales of the magazine fell steadily. In 1989 it was taken over by actor Tim Matheson , but he sold it after only two years. It was then taken over by J2 Communications , who were mainly interested in licensing the brand name for film productions. Sometimes only one magazine was brought onto the market each year and in 1998 it was finally discontinued. The brand name was sold again in 2002 and since then is a company called National Lampoon Inc .
