Frank Springer (comic artist)

Frank Springer (born December 6, 1929 in New York City , † April 2, 2009 in Damariscotta , Maine ) was an American comic artist, who was particularly popular with the Marvel Comics Dazzler and Nick Fury and the erotic comic The Adventures of Phoebe -Ghost became known.

Springer studied art at Syracuse University and graduated in 1952. After completing military service from 1952 to 1954, he first worked as a press illustrator and for advertising, before he supported George Wunder on the Terry and the Pirates strip from 1955 to 1960 . In 1965 and 1966 Springer drew the erotic comic The Adventures of Phoebe Zeit-Geist for the texts by Michael O'Donoghue for the magazine Evergreen Review . As a freelancer , he worked for Marvel Comics , Derll Comics and DC Comics , among others . Under the pseudonyms Francis Hollidge and Bob Monhegan , Springer made several contributions to National Lampoon . From 1995 to 1997 he was President of the National Cartoonists Society .

Springer, who had been married since 1956 and had five children, died of complications from prostate cancer .
