The shrill four on the move (original title: National Lampoon 's Vacation ) is an American comedy film directed by Harold Ramis from 1983 .

action

The Wagon Queen Family Truckster , the Griswolds' family car. George Barris made several of these tags for the film .

Clark, the head of the Griswold family, has planned the perfect car trip on the computer for this year's family vacation. She is supposed to lead him, his wife Ellen and the children Russell ("Rusty") and Audrey from their home in Chicago across the States to the amusement park "Walley World" in California . But the first complications already arise during the preparations. The car dealer from whom Clark ordered a new sports car cheats on him and turns him into an overpriced, error-prone rattle box.

After getting lost in St. Louis, Clark has to ask for directions in the red light district and his hubcaps are stolen. After falling asleep while driving at the wheel like the rest of the family, the four finally get onto the big highway. During a stopover in Kansas , where the Griswolds visit Ellen's cousin Catherine and her simple-minded husband Eddie, Ellen's quirky aunt Edna picks up on them - with the request that she and her vicious dog Dinky be delivered to her son Normy in Phoenix . Further difficulties arise with a highway policeman who tries to arrest Clark for animal cruelty because Dinky was forgotten to be tied to the bumper and after Clark gets lost and the car crashes in the desert. When Clark has spent the last of his money on repairs, Edna dies. Since none of the Griswolds know what to do with the corpse, they go to see cousin Normy as planned. Since he is away, they put Edna's body on the veranda.

After an argument with Ellen, Clark looks for a woman to meet her in the bar area of her accommodation. He encounters the blonde beauty again, who has flirted with him twice, unnoticed by the family. Clark cuts up mightily and pretends to be his brother's family. When Clark at the pool of the motel makes the remark that she misses nothing in life, the blonde jumps in naked and Clark does the same. But the water is far too cold for him and his screams alarm the hotel guests, including his family. Finally, the Griswolds reach "Walley World", only to read at the entrance that the amusement park has been closed for two weeks for renovation work. After all the adversities on arrival, Clark goes crazy and uses a toy gun to gain access to the park. He forces the security officer Lasky to try out all the attractions with them. The park is being cordoned off by the police and Mr. Walley himself shows up. Clark appeals to Mr. Walley's forbearance by maudlining his family's bad trip. As a result, the latter decides not to file a complaint.

Reviews

Janet Maslin wrote in the New York Times on July 29, 1983 that the comedy was a funny satire, but did not exaggerate the gags. Chevy Chase plays with more sharpness than in any of his previous roles.

Prisma found the comedy to be "loosely connected slapstick". It would rather be “duped” than criticized American society.

The lexicon of international films sees the film as a "[a] ls satire on the 'American way of life' slapstick comedy" that is "occasionally a little too over the top".

Remarks

  • The Six Flags Magic Mountain served as the filming location for the fictional Wally World amusement park .
  • The comedy cost about $ 15 million to produce and grossed about $ 61 million in US theaters.
  • The family car used in the film is a Ford LTD Country Squire Station Wagon converted by the Barris brothers .

Sequels

Five sequels have been filmed so far; Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo repeat their roles in the first three films. Schöne Bescherung 2 focuses on Randy Quaid as cousin Eddie and, unlike the other films, was produced for television and not for the cinema. In Vacation - Wir sind die Griswolds (2015) son Rusty is an adult and is now on vacation with his own family.
