action

Elliot Richards has an unsatisfactory call center job , no real friends, and is miserably in love with his colleague Alison. After another unsuccessful attempt at advances, he wishes at all costs to be able to win Alison over. He is promptly approached by an attractive woman in a bar who turns out to be the devil. The two sign a contract: In exchange for seven wishes, the incarnate gets Elliot's soul.

He starts immediately with his wishes and goes wrong every time: When he wants to be rich and powerful, he becomes a Colombian drug baron; the need to be the most emotionally sensitive man in the world turns him into a cowardly crybaby who bursts into tears at the sight of a sunset; the desire for an athletic body gives it a tiny penis ; when he wishes to be a charming woman who understands women, he becomes gay . Ultimately, he wishes to be President of the United States, but ends up as Abraham Lincoln a few seconds before his assassination. Elliot escapes dangerous situations with the help of a pager that he received from the devil and into which he has to enter the six three times.

After further disasters and a conversation with a mysterious man in a prison cell in which the devil has locked him, Elliot realizes that a pact with the devil is not a solution to his problems. When the devil tries to force him to utter his last wish, he uses it for Alison. Since this is a selfless wish, Elliot - as it stands in Article 147 § 9 Section 3 of the contract (in the original Article 667) - is released from the contract. Equipped with new self-confidence, he speaks to Alison, who is already taken. He quickly finds true love in his new neighbor, Nicole, who looks astonishingly like Alison. At the end of the film you see the mysterious man from the prison cell and the devil playing chess in a park.

Reviews

"Well played and staged in the dream passages just as lavishly as entertaining, the framework is limited to the best possible display of the leading actress."

“Whether as a drug boss, a woman who understands women, a basketball star or a man of letters: Brendan Fraser (“ The Mummy ”) is in top form in seven variations. Second trump card is Liz Hurley in a devilishly seductive outfit. The fun is the new edition of the Stanley Donen comedy "Bedazzled" from 1967. "

“Measured against its background [...], the claim of 'devilish' is zero, Ramis is content with letting the clumsy seeker stumble from one blunder to another. Anyway, it would be doubtful whether the material could still serve for more than boisterous nonsense in today's times. "

“Still, Harold Ramis 'remake of Stanley Donen's' Mephisto '68' with Dudley Moore doesn't go beyond a humorous, erratic sketch revue. After all, Fraser can let off steam that nothing is left to be desired. Raquel Welch was hellishly sharp in the role of the beloved at the time . The Hurley now looks as though devil hot out and slips as a cheerleader , nurse or traffic warden in trivial male fantasies, leaves a but cold. "

- Oliver Hüttmann at cinema.de

“'Teuflisch' is a thoroughly educational mainstreamer from Hollywood. [...] veteran Harold Ramis ( ' Groundhog Day ', ' Ghostbusters ') leaves you with,' the familiar sky-Hell and theme devilishly as pure fun again cheerful Urständ celebrate. "

Remarks

  • The film is the remake of the 1967 film Mephisto '68 (Bedazzled) starring Dudley Moore , Peter Cook and Raquel Welch.
  • The devil calls his two dogs Dudley and Peter, which can be seen as an allusion to Mephisto '68 .
  • The devil declares that he has been doing his job on November 16 for 6,000 years. This refers to the teachings of Archbishop James Ussher , who in the 17th century "calculated" that the world would be on October 23, 4004 BC. Was created.
  • Although this is never explicitly stated in the film, the appearance of the mysterious cellmate - and the fact that he is playing chess with the devil - suggests that he is an angel - or even God himself.
  • The article 667 and the number of the pager indicate the number 666 , which is the sign of the devil.
  • The devil's car is a Lamborghini Diablo .
  • The math homework the devil is wiping off the blackboard is proving Fermat's Great Theorem .
  • The desire to be a rock star wasn't implemented in the final version of the film. Thus a wish is “missing”. This is concealed by the devil's reference to the "fulfilled" wish regarding the burger, fries and a coke from McDonald's. However, this was fulfilled immediately at the first meeting and thus before the contract was signed. Furthermore, the devil says as he puts down the newly signed contract that it will start now. The scene of the rock star life is presented in the additional content of the DVD.
