Year One - A Rough Start (Original title: Year One ) is a comedy film from 2009, directed by Harold Ramis with Jack Black and Michael Cera in the lead roles.

Zed and his friend Oh live in a prehistoric village as hunters and gatherers . The tribe does not respect the unsuccessful hunter Zed and the gatherer Oh, nor do they care about women. After Zed eats a fruit from the forbidden tree of knowledge , he feels wiser and ponders the meaning of life. When his deed comes out, the shaman banishes him from the village. Since Zed accidentally burned Oh's hut, Oh follows him. Together they go beyond the supposed "end of the world" that should lie behind the mountains and meet Cain and Abel , who get into an argument. The two witness how Cain finally kills Abel. Cain urges them to have dinner together and later sells them as slaves. When a troop of warriors attack the caravan of slaves, Zed and Oh manage to escape. They meet Abraham and prevent him from sacrificing his son Isaac . Abraham takes them to the Hebrews and tells them about the sinful Sodom and Gomorrah , which gets Zed's attention. When Abraham got the idea to celebrate the day by circumcising the penis of all men in the name of God , the two of them flee and arrive at Sodom.
In Sodom they meet Cain again, who helps them to get a job in the city guard. When Princess Inanna appears in town, everyone kneels down in front of her, except for Zed. This arouses her attention so that she receives him in her palace in the evening. She asks Zed to enter the Holy of Holies because she thinks he is the chosen one. There Zed only finds Oh, who is hiding there from the stalking of the high priest. Both are captured and sentenced to death by stoning. Zed succeeds in obtaining a pardon from the king, who instead only condemns her to slave labor. When the king throws virgins into the fire so that the gods make it rain, Zed interrupts the ceremony. Meanwhile the Hebrews have also arrived in Sodom to fight the unbelieving sinners. The former rulers of Sodom are destroyed and the people celebrate Zed as the chosen one. However, Zed refuses, stating that anyone can be a chosen one.

Some critics complain that the original premise is destroyed by the unoriginal jokes. Cinema writes : “The idea of transporting two coarse prehistoric people into the world of the Old Testament sounds promising. [...] It's a shame that Harold Ramis garnishes his original storyline with deeper farting jokes and the common virgin and sex jokes.
