Nacho Libre is an American comedy film from the year 2006 about a Mexican Luchador . The film opened in American cinemas on June 16, 2006 and was written by the writers Jared Hess , Jerusha Hess and Mike White .

The story is based in part on the life of Fray Tormenta (in German "Storm Monch" or "Brother Storm"), also known as Reverend Sergio Gutierrez Benitez, who was a Catholic priest in real life, but also had a career as a freestyle wrestler (Mexican Luchador ) would have. His goal was to use the money he earned to support the orphanage that he ran.

action

The film begins in Ignacio's youth, as a child in an orphanage in Mexico. His parents (mother a Scandinavian and father a Mexican) died when he was very young. From an early age Ignacio was enthusiastic about the Mexican wrestling fighters of the Lucha Libre (Free Fight). He made cloaks and catcher masks (which are very popular in Mexico). As a punishment for his activities, he was transferred to the kitchen as a friar in the monastery.

The plot changes to the present. Ignacio is still enthusiastic about the Luchadores. His cooking skills, however, are limited - but this is mainly due to the lack of funds in the monastery. So there is day in and day out made from mashed beans with nachos , which a restaurant gives him free of charge.

One day a half-naked filthy man stole his chips. Ignacio ponders how he can get better food for his orphans. On the street he sees the Luchador Ramses, who seems to be swimming in money and is adored by everyone on the street. At the same time Ignacio discovers feelings for the nun, Sister Encarnacion, who has been transferred to his convent .

Ignacio decides to become a luchador. He lures the chip thief (Steven) and persuades him to form a team together. Steven agrees and gives himself the name "Esqueleto" (skeleton). In order to preserve his anonymity towards the monastery, Ignacio wears a mask and calls himself Nacho.

The team has its first fight and is crushed. When Nacho and Steven recover from their injuries in the locker room, to their amazement they are given an envelope with money. They learn that every catcher gets a share of the profit, regardless of whether he wins or loses. The audience also enjoyed their performance. You are asked to compete again next week.

Nacho uses the money to buy fresh food for his orphans and then use the rest to make his first costume. Nacho is not happy, however: he does not necessarily want to make money, he wants to finally win a fight. In his hopelessness he tries to get a training place with Ramses' manager. Steve and Ignacio sneak in at a party organized by the Lucha Libre manager, but are mocked and thrown out.

Both continue to fight their way through the league. You have to defeat one after the other to challenge Ramses (the reigning champion) in the final. The two almost succeed if Nacho did not fail at the last opponent Silencio. Nacho only got 2nd place.

Ignacio returns to the monastery. His habit accidentally catches fire and everyone sees the colorful catcher outfit. Faced with this, Nacho decides to go to the desert to live there.

The very next day Steve found him in the desert (in reality Nacho was only 500 meters from the village). He brings him the news that Silencio had an accident and cannot compete against Ramses. Since Nacho was the second, he can now compete against Ramses. In a flashback, you can see that Steve rode the motor trike over Silencio's foot when he watched him arguing with a thin boy over a loaf of bread.

Ignacio is skeptical whether he should really do that. Steve persuades him: he reveals to him that he always hated the orphans, but now he no longer does that and Nacho is the only hope for these children, they need a hero. Ignacio accepts this and accepts his fate.

Nacho sends a message to Sister Encarnacion the night before the fight: He tells her about his plan as a luchador and admits his love for her.

A fight ensues, Nacho is almost defeated by Ramses - at least the mask has already been torn off his head, which is the greatest disgrace a Luchador can suffer. When it is almost over, Nacho sees Sister Encarnacion appear in the arena with the orphans. All children wear masks to imitate Nacho as their role model. This gives Nacho once again indescribable powers and he manages to overpower Ramses. He throws Ramses out of the ring and then pounces on him like an eagle and defeats him. Nacho is the new champion.

Nacho keeps his promise, buys a bus for the orphans with which they can go on excursions immediately. The film ends with a trip for the children to the ruins on Monte Albán .

Reviews

"Wooden staged parody of a Mexican variety of catching that thrives on isolated punchlines and strange twists, but apart from its gifted leading actor, it has little glamor and is more likely to confirm prejudices."

“Almost exclusively bad gags for narrow-minded people! This hype has nothing more to offer. Leading actor Jack Black usually wears off after a few minutes and is only good in supporting roles. In this absurd parody of the bizarre world of Mexican wrestling, including the cult of the Virgin Mary, which has already been satirized a thousand times, and macho behavior, even the successful jokes are not remembered.
