Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport
The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport , abbreviated to BEST (in German about: Energy supply and local transport for Greater Mumbai), is the urban local transport and electricity company in the Indian metropolis of Mumbai . The state-owned organization, founded in 1873, operates one of the largest urban bus parks in India . Originally a tram company, the company developed into an electricity supplier in 1905 and a bus company in 1926. BEST is operated by the municipality as an independent company.
The bus company serves almost the entire city area and is also sometimes active beyond the city limits. In addition to the buses, BEST also operates ferry services. The organization's electricity division is one of the few electricity companies in India that has an annual profit. Until 1995 the abbreviation BEST stood for Bombay Electricity Supply and Transport ( Bombay's energy supply and local transport ). After the city's name was formally changed from Bombay to Mumbai, the name of the company was changed to Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport. Brihanmumbai means something like Greater Mumbai.
