Chase began his comedy career writing for the satirical magazine Mad and the television show Channel One , which resulted in his film debut Big Gäg - Movie Station . Chevy Chase became known as a member of the comedy show Saturday Night Live , which first aired in the United States in 1975. In 1976 he left the ensemble during the second season, as his contract was limited to one year and he was able to take part in feature films due to his strong growth in popularity. In the following years, like other former SNL members, he often returned as a guest. He was last seen in 2007 in an edition of the Weekend Update - part of the show that he originally hosted.
He achieved his breakthrough as a comedian and actor with films such as Madness Without Handicap , Spies Like Us , Help The Americans Come , Fletch - The Troublemaker , Schöne Bescherung , Fletch - The Jack of all trades and Hunt for an Invisible Man by John Carpenter .
In his private life, Chase struggled with alcohol and drug problems in the 1980s. At this time he also divorced his first wife, Jacqueline Carlin. At times he seemed to have his problems under control, but was convicted of drink driving in 1995. In September 2016, the media reported that Chase had visited an addiction clinic again . He had previously been treated at the famous Betty Ford Clinic for an addiction to pain medication .
Chase has been married to his wife Jayni since 1982 and has three daughters with her: Cydney Cathalene Chase (* 1982), Caley Leigh Chase (* 1984) and Emily Evelyn Chase (* 1988).
In 1986, Chase appeared in the second version of the music video for Paul Simon's You Can Call Me Al (appeared on Graceland ), where he lip-synched Simon's vocals.
Chase has hosted the Academy Awards twice ( 1987 and 1988 ) and twice presented a side Oscar ( 1990 and 1991 ).
From 2009 to 2013, Chase starred on the television series Community as Pierce Hawthorne, an often grumpy, aged industrialist and millionaire. Chase left the series at the end of the fourth season due to personal conflicts with the creators of the series.
