Community is an American comedy series developed by Dan Harmon . At the center of the action is a study group of students at the fictional Greendale Community College , all of whom have the goal of graduating. The series was initially broadcast for five seasons from September 17, 2009 to April 17, 2014 on the US broadcaster NBC , then discontinued by NBC and then extended by Yahoo for another season. The sixth and last was published weekly on Yahoo from March 17 to June 2, 2015. In Germany, the series was first broadcast from 2012 to 2015. The series received mostly good reviews. The series is best known for its humor and character-centered structure as well as for subversion of film and television clichés, parodies and references to pop culture.

action

After Jeff Winger lost his bar license because his degree was faked, he was forced to catch up with his diploma. Therefore he attends a community college in Greendale, Colorado. The series focuses on a learning group that he founded there to get closer to Britta Perry, whom he has had an eye on. Initially reluctant, Jeff closes soon friendship with the members of the group, which soon (to a community English community ) grow together.

characters

The main characters of the series are the members of the study group founded by Jeff Winger: Jeff, eloquent former lawyer; Britta Perry, former anarchist trying to get her life back on track; Pierce Hawthorne, an aged industrialist and millionaire who visits Greendale for solitude; Abed Nadir, pop culture geek and film student who struggles to socialize; Shirley Bennett, newly divorced mother who seeks independence and is a staunch Christian; Troy Barnes, former high school quarterback who lost his football scholarship to an alleged injury and then moved to Greendale; and Annie Edison, pedantic ambitious who wants to get close to her ambitious career goals after becoming addicted to Adderall and having a nervous breakdown in community college.

In addition, the following figures appear regularly: Ben "Señor" Chang, who initially works as a Spanish teacher, later also as a student, security chief of the college, "Changnesia" patient and finally appears again as a teacher, the British psychology professor Ian Duncan and the Dean Craig Pelton, who is struggling to make his college appear like a real university and trying almost obsessively to be politically correct. In the fifth season, Buzz Hickey, professor of criminology, joins the circle of regular characters.

background

Community colleges in the United States are local institutions that offer two years of college and / or professional training so that a junior (3rd year of college) can begin at a four-year college or university. This route is recommended if your high school grades are poor or if you can't pay college college tuition fees.

The series began on September 17, 2009 on the US broadcaster NBC as a co-production of Universal Television and Sony Pictures Television . The pilot episode , which ran after the season premiere of Das Büro , reached around 7.89 million viewers and a rating of 3.8 in the advertising-relevant target group of 18-49 year olds. Although the ratings fell in the following weeks, NBC ordered a full season with 22 episodes at the end of October 2009, and another three more the following January, so that the first season comes to a total of 25 episodes. Overall, the first season was watched by an average of 4.99 million people, making it 97th among all series broadcast that season. This resulted in the extension for a second season announced on March 5, 2010.

This season began broadcasting on NBC on September 23, 2010. While the season premiere was still seen by just under five million, the audience numbers fell to just under three million towards the end of the season. On average, the second season was watched by 4.48 million Americans and thus reached rank 115.

Although the ratings continued to fall, NBC announced in mid-March 2011 the order for a third season, which began broadcasting on September 22, 2011 on American television. In November 2011, NBC finally announced that Community would be phased out after the Christmas break and replaced with 30 Rock . The broadcast of the remaining twelve episodes of the third season began on March 15, 2012. For the finale of the third season on May 17, 2012 three episodes were shown in a row. As in the previous season, Community lost some viewers and reached an average of 4.03 million viewers and a rank of 128 in the 2011–2012 season.

In May 2012, NBC extended the series to include a thirteen-part fourth season. At the same time, the production company Sony Pictures Television fired series creator Dan Harmon from his position as showrunner . The fourth season began broadcasting on NBC on February 7, 2013. After the series had started with 3.9 million viewers, the ratings fell to a series low of 2.3 million viewers. With the end of the season on May 9, 2013, the ratings increased again slightly. On average, the fourth season was seen by 2.9 million viewers. Critics and viewers criticized a qualitative drop in the fourth season due to Harmon's departure. With the end of the season, Chevy Chase also left the series. This had already come into the press before because he had conflicts with the makers of the series.

Despite the low ratings, the extension of the series by a 13-part fifth season was announced on May 10, 2013. Dan Harmon returned as a showrunner for this season. Chevy Chase returned for a guest appearance on the first episode of season five. Donald Glover only appeared in the first five episodes of season five and then left the series to pursue other projects. The fifth season kicked off on January 2, 2014 on NBC. The fifth season finale ran on April 17, 2014. Three weeks later, on May 9, 2014, NBC announced the discontinuation of the series.

On June 30, 2014, Yahoo announced a 13-part sixth and final season for its streaming service Yahoo! Screen in order. Yvette Nicole Brown left the series after the first episode of the sixth season due to family problems. She returned to the series for the series finale. The sixth season was released weekly on Yahoo Screen starting March 17, 2015. The last episode appeared on June 2, 2015.
