Gary Foster (born May 25, 1936 in Leavenworth , Kansas ) is an American jazz musician ( alto saxophonist , flautist, clarinetist ) of modern jazz .

Heavily influenced by Lee Konitz , Gary Foster graduated from the University of Kansas in 1961 and settled in the Los Angeles area, where he worked in Hollywood studios, as a teacher and in big bands; In the late 1960s he played with Warne Marsh for Clare Fischer (heard on their 1968 album "Thesaurus"), after an episode of only private sessions he played in Warne Marsh's quartet with which he recorded the sensational album Ne Plus Ultra . In the 1970s Foster played in the Toshiko Akiyoshi / Lew Tabackin Big Band ( Insights , 1976), with Marty Paichs Dek-Tette and again with Clare Fischer. In the 1980s he worked with Mel Tormé ("Reunion", 1988) and Cal Tjader , in the 1990s with Milt Jackson and as accompanist with Rosemary Clooney and Wesla Whitfield . His duo album with Alan Broadbent received attention in 1993 on the Concord Jazz label ("Duo Series, Vol. 4"). In 1998 he played in the big band of Kyle Eastwood . He recorded four albums under his own name for the Revelation label (1968–1985), as well as for Concord Jazz .
