Josef Cardinal (born March 3, 1937 in Hollowing near Marienbad , Czechoslovakia ; † July 2, 2010 in Zorneding ) was a German painter . From 1946 he lived in Zorneding near Munich. After training to become a master painter, he began an artistic training course, which he completed in 1972 at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts as a master student with a diploma. Since then he has been working as a freelance artist.

The Süddeutsche Zeitung writes that Josef Cardinal tries to portray the entire spectrum of life, but especially humans, as the so-called coronation of creation. However, the artist cannot be assigned or classified. He is seen as an individualist who says of himself, " Painting seems like a game of chance to me, I feel that I want to win even if I lose ". The fact that Cardinal mostly depicts his characters naked may seem confusing at first glance. On closer inspection, however, they only get something timeless and lose all obscenity. In strong, clear colors, he often paints situations that by no means give cause for joy. But there is always reason to think about it (e.g. “Der Sturz”, 1997). In an interview with the Süddeutsche Zeitung, for example, he said that he did not want to join the “trend to say nothing”, which in his opinion influences many modern artists. He thinks nothing of purely decorative pictures that are only defined by colorful surfaces and without a subject. He remains true to this credo in his landscape pictures and drawings (e.g. “In the nature reserve”, 2000).

In Cardinal's biography, the art historian Karin Birner describes the following about his works in the display collection of the Egerland Art Gallery: “The essential ingredients of earthly forms of life, the origins of all being: cell-like substances, water, light forms and the atmospheric appear again and again as basic motifs in his oeuvre. In this peristasis act human-like beings that are flat and outlined with a few, sketch-like fine lines. Often they mix with the color of the background, appear weightless and bodiless, formed from light, air or water, and convey the impression of a mysterious, indissoluble connection with cosmic energy. Metamorphoses, the change from the earthly to another form of existence could easily be accomplished by them. With these fantastic auratic creatures, a flowing colorism and the often three-part arrangement of the canvases in the manner of a winged altar, the artist creates a lyrical spirituality, the definition of which is to be sought not in the theological but in the philosophy of an age in which the empirical sciences to become a substitute for religion ” . He also told the Süddeutsche Zeitung that he was interested in religion and philosophy, and he himself believed that there was never a beginning and that there would never be an end.
