Alan Broadbent

Alan Broadbent , MNZM (born April 23, 1947 in Auckland , New Zealand ) is a jazz pianist , arranger and composer .

life and work

He first studied piano and music theory in New Zealand, but came to the USA in 1966 to study at Berklee College of Music . He was also a student of Lennie Tristano . From 1969 to 1972 he arranged and composed for Woody Herman (including 1975 Variations on a scene ), in which he also played as a soloist. After this time he settled in Los Angeles . In the 1970s he worked both in the classical field (where he also wrote classical chamber music) and as a jazz musician: in 1975 in the John Klemmer Band, from 1979 in a trio with Bud Shank and as a sideman for Warne Marsh , Chet Baker and Gary Foster and Companion of the singer Irene Kral . In the eighties he began to participate in Charlie Haden's Quartet West , which made him known to a wider audience. In the 1990s he received two Grammies for his arrangements with Natalie Cole and Shirley Horn , accompanied singers such as Kenny Rankin and Sheila Jordan and released recordings with his trio under his own name. In his jazz piano playing, the classical training can sometimes be heard clearly. As a conductor he also worked for Kerem Görsev ( Therapy ).
