Larry Koonse (born July 7, 1961 in San Diego ) is an American modern jazz guitarist .

Live and act

Koonse began playing the guitar at the age of seven; Already as a teenager he recorded his first album in 1978 with his father Dave Koonse, who is also a guitarist, Dave and Larry Koonse - Father and Son Jazz Guitars . In 1984 he received his Bachelor in Jazz Studies from the University of Southern California . He then played for six years with John Dankworth and Cleo Laine . During his career, Koonse also worked in a trio with Tierney Sutton and Hubert Laws , as well as a studio musician a. a. with Karrin Allyson , Paul Anka , Michael Bublé , Alan Broadbent , Bob Brookmeyer , Billy Childs , Bill Cunliffe , David Friesen , Terry Gibbs , John Gross , Jeff Lorber , Warne Marsh , Bennie Maupin , John Patitucci , Linda Ronstadt , Jimmy Rowles , Mel Tormé , Jimmy Wyble , Ron Kalina and the Percy Faith Orchestra. He was the co-leader of the LA Jazz Quartet , with which he recorded several albums. His guitar playing found use in the biopic Crazy about the guitarist Hank Garland , he was also involved in the soundtrack of the David Mamet film Redbelt (2008). He put on a number of albums under his own name, some on the Jazz Compass label he co-founded , including Americana with bassist Scott Colley , and Dialogues of the Heart (1997) with his father Dave Koonse. He taught at the California Institute of the Arts in the 1990s .
