David Friesen (born May 6, 1942 in Tacoma , Washington ) is an American jazz bassist .

Live and act

Friesen started playing the ukulele and accordion at the age of 10 and learned to play the guitar professionally at the age of 16 . Only after his military service, some of which he spent in Europe, did he find the double bass in 1964 . He first played locally on the Seattle jazz scene , where he played with jazz musicians traveling through. Then he became a member of John Handy’s band . He then played with Joe Henderson and in 1975 with Billy Harper , with whom he also visited Europe. In 1977 he performed with Ted Curson at the Monterey Jazz Festival and then worked with Ricky Ford , Duke Jordan , Sam Rivers , John Stowell and Paul Horn . Friesen toured and made recordings with numerous jazz greats, including Chick Corea , Michael Brecker , Stan Getz , Dexter Gordon , Mal Waldron , Dizzy Gillespie , Jim Pepper , Denny Zeitlin , Paul McCandless and Glen Moore . In Germany he was and can be seen more often as a soloist and in a duo with Uwe Kropinski and Christian Hassenstein . He also performed with the Music Ensemble of Benares .

Friesen is one of those bass players who are able to captivate the audience with a bass solo concert. His playing, however, is not characterized by extroversion; Friesen embodies the type of the "withdrawn artist". Its sound is also due to the use of the Oregon bass, an electrically detached, self-designed instrument.

His discography currently includes 65 CDs and he can be heard as a fellow musician on around 100 other recordings. In addition to his concerts, Friesen is also active in jazz training. The actress Dyan Cannon is his sister.
