John Stowell (born July 30, 1950 in New York ) is an American jazz guitarist , composer , author and music teacher .

Live and act

Stowell, who plays electric and acoustic guitar, grew up in Connecticut and took lessons from Linc Chamberland and John Mehegan . In 1976 the long-term collaboration with bassist David Friesen began in New York ; In 1983 the two musicians went on a tour of the Soviet Union with Paul Horn and his son, the drummer Robin Horn . In 1977 he presented the debut album Golden Delicious ; his companions were Jim McNeely , Mike Richmond and Billy Hart .

Stowell is also active as a music teacher, holds workshops in Germany (including at the Jazz & Rock Schools in Freiburg and with Frank Haunschild , with whom he recorded a duo album), in Indonesia, Argentina, as well as in the United States and Canada. He also worked on various projects with Uwe Kropinski , Dave Liebman , Hiram Mutschler , Gérard Pansanel , Kelley Shannon and Nicolao Valiensi . He served as the assistant director of Oregon Public Broadcasting's PDX Jazz Summit in 1991; since 1995 he has been writing columns for a number of music magazines such as Downbeat , Guitar Player, Canadian Musician, Soundcheck and Guitar Club. In 2005 he published the book and DVD Jazz Guitar Mastery . Stowell lives in Portland, Oregon .

John Stowell plays a single note style / single line style in which melodies are developed from individual notes rather than from chord progressions .

Awards

Stowell's album Through the Listening Glass with David Friesen was voted one of the "ten best albums of the decade" by the Los Angeles Examiner. In 1978 and 1979 he was Talent Deserving Wider Recognition of the Downbeat's International Critic's Poll .
