Nicolao Valiensi

Nicolao Valiensi (* 1966 in Garfagnana ) is an Italian jazz trombonist, euphonium player and composer.

Live and act

Valiensi studied trombone at the Lucca Music Academy. He was then a member of the RAI Radio Symphony Orchestra in Naples; During his military service he played in the music corps of the Carabinieri in Turin. He played in the chamber orchestra of the Tuscany region, took part in the Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago and performed with the I Solisti Veneti and the RAI radio big band in Milan.

Since 1986 he has been first trombonist in the Big Band of the Barga Jazz Festival , where he has performed with musicians such as Enrico Rava , Paolo Fresu , Gianluigi Trovesi , Bruno Tommaso and Giorgio Gaslini . After studying jazz trombone and instrumental pedagogy with Jiggs Whigham at the Cologne University of Music , Valiensi, who grew up with the tradition of the Italian banda as a child, founded the Metafisica band with fourteen jazz musicians in 2002 . Its members are the clarinetists Georg Wissel , Andrea Gellert , Annette Maye and Felix Petry , the flutist Angelika Sheridan , the trumpeters Udo Moll , Stefan Meinberg and Sebastian Lutz , the trombonists Daniel Scheier and Matthias Muche , the tuba players Joachim Gellert and Carl Ludwig Hübsch and the percussionists Roland Höppner and Frank Köllges . Valiensi also led a quintet with the pianist Simone Venturi , the guitarist Sauro Donati , the double bass player Luca Franchini and the drummer Franco Mariani .

As a sideman, he worked on projects and recordings with Lee Konitz and Dave Liebman , Tom Harrell and John Stowell . He was also a member of the notabu, ensemble neue musik in Düsseldorf, the group novotnik 44 (with Udo Moll , Annette Maye, Ralph Beerkircher , Thomas Gier and Dirk-Peter Kölsch ), in Frank Köllges' Intermission Missiles , in the Tom Lorenz Quintet , in the James Choice Orchestra and in Norbert Stein's Ensemble Pata Horns and Drums .

For the Banda Metafisica , Valiensi composed more than forty waltzes, miniatures and marches in the Italian banda tradition. In his home region he collected songs that he published in a two-volume collection of Garfagnana folk songs . He also composed larger works, including a music theater piece and a Requiem for jazz orchestra that premiered in 2000.

Valiensi teaches trombone and euphonium at the Clara Schumann Music School in Düsseldorf and leads the school's wind orchestra. He is also a lecturer at the Lucca University of Music.
