Norbert Stein (* 1953 ) is a German jazz musician (saxophonist, composer and band leader).

Live and act

Norbert Stein studied saxophone between 1973 and 1979 at the jazz course at the Cologne University of Music . He first became known as a member of the groups Boury , NoNett , and Headband , with whom he was also on international tours. He then founded his own, staffed, fairly stable groups, including Christopher Dell , Frank Gratkowski , Thomas Heberer , Michael Heupel, Frank Köllges and Albrecht Maurer .

For this, Stein developed his concept of so-called pata music based on the pataphysics of the writer Alfred Jarry . The music should give a flow, i.e. that is, it should be in motion, but not in a hectic pace, but with steadiness, even at changing tempos; it does not have to be in idyllic landscapes, but it should create the listener's emotional readiness to be carried away. In his compositions, Stein creates so-called “staged spaces”, giving the individual instrumentalists moods within which they can then move freely as a soloist. The pieces are a balance between sophisticated arrangements and plenty of scope for spontaneity and interactivity. He could u. a. also realize with composition commissions.

Stein was with his various, mostly co-existing formations -  Pata on the Cadillac, Pata Masters, Pata Generators, Pata Orchester, Pata Horns and Pata Trio  - at numerous festivals and international concert tours, some of which were supported by the Goethe-Institut to collaborate with local musicians came. Some of the musical encounters that resulted from this (among others in Australia, Brazil, France, Morocco, Indonesia) have also been released on CD. There was an intensive collaboration in several projects with the musicians of the Association à la Recherche d'un Folklore Imaginaire . Since 1987 (2013) 21 publications of his works in the field of current contemporary music have appeared on his own label PATA MUSIC .

Stein was a long-time member of the Cologne Saxophone Mafia and co-founder of the James Choice Orchestra , of which he was co-director until 2008. But he was also involved in recordings with Karlheinz Stockhausen .
