Djaduk Ferianto

Gregorius Djaduk Ferianto (born July 19, 1964 in Yogyakarta ; † November 13, 2019 there ) was an Indonesian actor , director and musician ( vocals , kendang , kemanak , other percussion instruments , composition ).

Live and act

Ferianto comes from a family of artists; he is the youngest son of the choreographer and painter Bagong Kussudiardja and the younger brother of Butet Kartaredjasa , an actor and theater actor from Indonesia. He attended workshops in Japan and North America, but has no formal music training.

Ferianto first founded the Rheze Group and the Wathathitha Creative Music Group . In 1995 he founded the Kua Etnika ensemble , which is rooted in the gamelan of central Java. The group he leads has devoted itself to developing new forms of expression in the gamelan tradition. The eight musicians play traditional Indonesian instruments and interpret some pieces vocal. What is special about Kua Etnika is the attempt to combine the various musical traditions from Java , Bali , Kalimantan and Sumatra with western jazz sounds . The instruments are played in free improvisations and jazz-oriented compositions. In 2000 the group received the UNESCO Music Prize. The Pata Masters of Norbert Stein Ferianot with was Kua Etnika 2003 on tour in Java; this resulted in a joint album. In 2004 his group performed their audiovisual composition “Everlasting Kretek Heritage” in Budapest, Krakow, Graz, Vienna, Utrecht, Amsterdam and Prague as well as in Panama, and in 2015 at the Museumsuferfest in Frankfurt am Main. Since 1997 Ferianto has also dealt with Keroncong music, which he performed with the Sinten Remen Orchestra and documented on various albums. He also performed with Nicole Johänntgen at Jazz Gunung 2014 . He was also a member of the Gandrik Theater in Yogyakarta.

Since the turn of the millennium, Ferianto was increasingly active as a film composer . In addition to his work as a musician and actor, he staged several theater performances and also worked for television. He was also the musical director of the Jazz Gunung festival and the originator of Ngayogjazz , an annual concert series in Yogyakarta.
