Bruno Tommaso

Bruno Tommaso (born November 20, 1946 in Rome ) is an Italian bassist , arranger and composer of modern creative jazz . He has been one of the leading avant-garde musicians in Italy since the 1970s.

Live and act

Bruno Tommaso is a cousin of the bassist Giovanni Tommaso and is considered one of the most creative arrangers and orchestral conductors in Italy. He is the first chairman of the Association of Italian Jazz Musicians and was one of the founding members of the Italian Unabile Orchestra around 1990 . Tommaso played with numerous musicians from the Italian jazz scene, such as Giorgio Gaslini , Enrico Rava , Mario Schiano , Franco D'Andrea , Eugenio Colombo and Enrico Pieranunzi . Since 1981 he has recorded a number of albums under his own name, including a. for the jazz label Splasc (h) .

His work includes the record Su Un Tema Di Jerome Kern and a film soundtrack for the film of the same name Steamboat Bill, jr. by Buster Keaton . He also worked as an arranger; he arranged opera arias for Enrico Rava ( Rava L'Opera Va , 1993 and Carmen , 1995 - released on Label Bleu ) and for Gianluigi Trovesi ( Around Small Fairy Tales , 2001). In the Italian Unabile Orchestra , to which he is still on friendly terms after his departure, he led the recording of his tracks such as " I Virtuosi di Noci " (on the album Live in Noci , 1995) and " Il Maestro Muratore " (on Skies of Europe , 1994).

Tommaso also worked as artistic director and arranger with the Gruppo Romano Free Jazz . He also recorded a suite for improvising soloists and orchestra, Nux Erat (CMC, 1994), which also included Pino Minafra , Gianluigi Trovesi and Evan Parker . In Il Diritto e il Rovescio (Siena Jazz, 1996), Tommaso used texts by the judges Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino , who were murdered by the Cosa Nostra in Sicily for their activities against organized crime. He taught at the Naples Conservatory , where he led an orchestra with the singer Maria Pia De Vito , with whom the album Oltre Napoli la Notte (2000) was created.
