Mario Schiano

Mario Schiano (born July 20, 1933 in Naples , † May 10, 2008 in Rome ) was an Italian jazz alto saxophonist , band leader and composer of free jazz . Since the late 1960s he has been one of the leading musicians of the jazz avant-garde in Italy.

Live and act

After the Jazz Podium, Schiano is one of the initiators of free jazz in Italy. His role model was initially Charlie Parker . He was the founder of the group Gruppo Romano Free Jazz in Turin in 1967 , which existed until the mid-1970s; it was originally a trio with bassist Marcello Melis (1939–1994) and drummer Franco Pecori and was then expanded to a quartet with Giancarlo Schiaffini and Bruno Tommaso (who joined the band for Melis). Their recording "If Not Ecstatic We Refund" from 1970 counts as a manifesto of the Italian independent scene. His subsequent big band productions in the 1970s, in which u. a. the saxophonist Massimo Urbani took part, appeared later on the album "Sud" (Splasc (h)), his few recordings from the 1980s, a. a. with Irène Schweizer , Paul Lovens and his "Action Trio" with Giorgio Gaslini and Bruno Tommaso on the compilation "Meetings" (Splasc (h), 1980–93). In 1990 he was a founding member of the Italian Unabile Orchestra , a regular member of the formation until 2003 and was involved in the production of all albums until 2004. Since the beginning of the 1990s he has worked on numerous projects of his own. a. with Bill Dixon , Evan Parker , Alexander von Schlippenbach , Joëlle Léandre , Ernst Reijseger , Peter Kowald , Paul Rutherford , Phil Wachsmann , Ernst-Ludwig Petrowsky , Famoudou Don Moye and Barry Guy . According to Tom Lord , he was involved in 80 recording sessions in the field of jazz between 1960 and 2002, most recently in a trio with Xu Fengxia and Martin Blume .

Schiano also took part in the improvisation ensembles Musica Elettronica Viva and Nuova Consonanza, which came from new music . Under his artistic aegis, the Controindicazioni Festival in Rome developed over two decades into one of the most important free jazz events in the country. Schiano played soprano saxophone , organ and Shékere as secondary instruments .
