Xu Fengxia ( Chin.徐鳳霞 / 徐凤霞Pinyin Xú Fèngxiá, * 1963 in Shanghai ) is a Chinese guzheng player.

Xu Fengxia was taught to play traditional Chinese stringed instruments from the age of five. After attending the Conservatory and the Music Academy in Shanghai, she played in traditional orchestras and gave solo concerts. As a member of the Shanghai Orchestra of Chinese Music , she made her first guest tour in Germany in 1988. At the same time she caused a sensation with Shanghai's first women rock band , in which she worked as a bass player. In 1990 she played in the first jazz concert at the People's Theater in Shanghai.

Xu Fengxia has lived in Germany since 1991. She plays the vaulted board zither Guzheng and next to it the long-necked lute Sanxian in formations that perform traditional Chinese music , such as the Gufeng Ensemble , a group of four Chinese musicians living in Germany. But she also works with the Nieuw Ensemble Amsterdam , the Bremer Kammerphilharmonie and the Ensemble recherche , which specialize in the interpretation of contemporary music. For a cross over project of traditional music from China and Western avant-garde, she made her skills available as part of a CD production by Klaus Hinrich Stahmer . Since 1995 she has worked in Peter Kowald's Global Village Ensemble , where she gained experience with free improvisation.

In the Trio San He with the flautist Michael Heupel and the drummer Lucas Niggli , in duos with the violinist Gunda Gottschalk on the one hand, Matthias Schubert or Uwe Oberg on the other, and in the Trio New Flags with Wolfgang Fuchs and Roger Turner , she explores the possibilities of traditional instruments in the field of free improvisation. In addition, with her collaboration with the sitar player Subroto Roy Chowdhury and the tabla player Saibal Chatterjee , she has crossed the boundaries between Chinese and Indian music . She also appeared in a trio with Wu Wei and Günter Baby Sommer . She forms the East-West Trio with the French improvisation musicians Didier Petit and Sylvain Kassap .
