Gunda Gottschalk (* 1969 in Bückeburg ) is a German violinist who specializes in improvised and contemporary music .

Life

Between 1990 and 1994 Gottschalk studied classical violin with Johannes Prelle and Susanne Imhof at the Musikhochschule Köln-Wuppertal . Master classes and private studies with Stefan Picard, Antje Weithaas , Sascha Bron and Angelika Budde completed the training. With Thomas Beimel , Ute Völker , Karola Pasquay and Ortrud Kegel, she has been a member of Partita Radicale , an ensemble for new and improvised music that has also become known for its silent film programs with live music, musical theater productions and stage music , since 1991 . In 1994/95 she met Peter Kowald , who was carrying out his project “365 days at the ORT” in Wuppertal at the time. She makes music in Kowald's local ensemble and plays there with important international soloists of improvised music, for example Joëlle Léandre and Evan Parker . Since 1995, together with Kowald and the Guzheng player Xu Fengxia , she has formed the backbone of the Global Village Ensemble , which brought together musicians from various cultural backgrounds and in line- ups ranging from trio to sextet with Jin Hi Kim, Savina Yannatou , Pamela Z , Jeanne Lee, among others , Otomo Yoshihide , Lê Quan Ninh and Naná Vasconcelos gave concerts.

Since 1995 Gottschalk, who also plays the viola , has also worked with the Belgian bassist Peter Jacquemyn ; the joint duo CD "e pericoloso sporgersi" was awarded in 2001 by the Young Talent Forum of the Society for New Music and the Ensemble Modern . Kris Defoort and Fabrizio Cassol took part in their 1995 album Variations on A Love Supreme . In 1998 the French pianist Christine Wodrascka brought her as well as the clarinetist Isabelle Duthuit to her Trio Krizda . Solo tours in 2002 and 2003 took her through the USA. She entered there u. a. with William Parker , Susie Ibarra , Assif Tsahar , Michael Zerang , Oliver Lake and Fred Frith . She continues to work in the Duo Youlan with Xu Feng Xia.

Together with Thomas Beimel, Gunda Gottschalk received a work and production grant from the Filmstiftung NRW in 1999/2000 , which was used to realize the radio play “Das Paradies”. The musician, who lives in Wuppertal, connects her work with dance, theater, film, composition, visual arts and literature. Since 2002 she has been the managing director of the record label free elephant .
