Margarethe "Guggi" Löwinger (born April 5, 1939 in Vienna ; † April 21, 2018 there ) was an Austrian singer , actress and dancer .

Education and career

Löwinger comes from the Viennese actor dynasty Löwinger . She was the daughter of Paul Löwinger and his wife Liesl , née Meinhard. She was already on stage at the age of six and began her dance training with Dia Luca at the age of nine. As a 13-year-old she received lessons at the private drama school in Krauss . For a while she considered becoming a doctor, but from 1956 she studied singing with the Hungarian-born chamber singer Esther Réthy in Vienna.

Her debut was at the Stadttheater Baden as Piccolo in Im Weiße Rössl, followed by a series of leading roles in operettas, drama and musicals (e.g. Sissy , Scampolo , and Das Glas Wasser ). Löwinger played at the State Theater on Gärtnerplatz in Munich and occasionally in television and film productions. In 1957 she moved to Koblenz , where she played the leading role in Gigi , and here she was also on stage in various operettas and plays. She also recorded records.

In 1959 Löwinger returned to Austria and since then has been a permanent member of the Vienna Volksoper . She was at most of the Austrian summer festivals. She toured with the Volksoper to Japan, the USA and the Soviet Union.

Guggi Löwinger participated several times at the Seefestspiele in Mörbisch : 1970 as Etelka in Die Hungarian Hochzeit , 1971 as Stasi in Die Csárdásfürstin and 1973 as O Lia San in Viktoria und ihr Husar .

Guggi's 40th stage anniversary was celebrated on May 26, 2005 in the Vienna Volksoper following the operetta Der Opernball , Director Berger gave a speech on the stage, where he noted that he had been asked by the jubilee to avoid any dates, so it was only mentioned that the petite actress was still size 34.

From March 2007 she was on the jury of the third season of the Austrian Dancing Stars and thus solved “Mr. Wonderful ” Harald Serafin exits .

Löwinger, who had a son from her first marriage, was married to the operetta tenor Peter Minich († 2013) in her second marriage .

In recent years, Guggi Löwinger u. a. as Mrs. Pearce in My Fair Lady , as Palmyra in Der Opernball , as Jacqueline in La Cage aux Folles and as Mrs. Schmidt in The Sound of Music on the stage of the Vienna Volksoper . In the 2008/09 season she could be heard again in the role of matchmaker Jente in Anatevka . Her last appearance was on January 26, 2018 at the Vienna Volksoper as Frau Schmidt in The Sound of Music , in the same month she also appeared there as Mrs. Pearce and Mrs. Higgins in My Fair Lady .

According to the company, she appeared in 2275 performances of 37 works in 43 roles at the Vienna Volksoper and appeared in 18 premieres.

On the night of 20 to 21 April 2018 she died in a Vienna hospital at the age of 79 years and was on the Sieveringer cemetery (Division 2, Group 12, number 3, number 3) in Vienna in an honorary dedicated grave buried . Her husband Peter Minich was exhumed from the grave site at the Vienna Central Cemetery (group 40, number 193) and buried next to her.

  • She only appeared once on the well-known and popular Löwinger stage .
  • In Germany she appeared under the name Löwin, not Löwinger and also not under Guggi, but Margit.
  • The artist was not only size 34, but also a very small shoe size. In an interview, she mentioned that it made her feel like she was in paradise in Japan.
