Dancing Stars is a dance show on Austrian television ORF , the first season of which was broadcast in October and November 2005. It is a licensed version of the BBC show Strictly Come Dancing , which is marketed internationally under various titles such as Dancing with the Stars (USA) or Let's Dance (Germany).
concept
Dancing Stars is a dance competition in which a celebrity and a professional dancer compete in a series of live shows at the ORF center. The dances are accompanied live by the Dancing Stars Orchestra .
Initially eight to twelve couples show one or more dances in each program. The evaluation is made up of two components: On the one hand, a four-person jury awards points for each pair, on the other hand, the viewers vote on the pairs by telephone . At the end of each broadcast, the pair with the lowest rating leaves the game. On the last evening of the series, the winner will be determined between the remaining three couples.
Each jury member gives each pair points between 1 and 10. The jury members' points for each pair are added up and put the pairs in a jury ranking list. Within this ranking list, the couples receive overall rating points in descending order, with the last pair receiving one overall rating point.
According to the number of calls, the couples are also placed in a ranking, which leads to overall rating points. The caller ranking list and thus the overall rating points are not mentioned.
At the end of each broadcast, the couple with the fewest overall rating points leaves the competition. In the final, the couple with the most points overall wins. In the first season, the winners donated money from a sponsor to a Licht ins Dunkel project . From the second season onwards there was no longer this winner's bonus.
From the fifth to the eleventh season, couples with male and couples with female professional dancers were rated separately in the first two programs. Since the eighth season, none of the couples had to leave the show in these programs, the jury and audience ratings were taken over for the third edition. In the twelfth season, all couples danced in all shows, the ratings of the first show were carried over to the second, where the first couple was eliminated.

12th season
At the ORF program presentation for 2018, ORF announced that a 12th season was planned for autumn 2018. In December 2017 it was announced that the show would not continue until 2019. It could be seen again on ORF eins from March 15, 2019; the final took place on May 10, 2019.
The 12th season took place in a slightly reduced version. Instead of ten, only nine couples (5 men, 4 women) danced, the first couple had to leave the show in the second episode. While Alfons Haider and Vadim Garbuzov danced a male couple for the first time in the 6th season in 2011 , the first all-female couple could be seen in 2019. Virginia Ernst dances with Alexandra Scheriau.
The former member of the National Council of Bündnis Zukunft Österreich (BZÖ) and now PR consultant Stefan Petzner caused controversy within the 12th season . According to the expert jury, he should have gone through the least performance increase of all celebrities within the season. This not only led to tension and a confrontation on camera between Petzner and juror Karina Sarkissova . In the 4th broadcast on April 5, 2019, Petzner only received 4 jury points, which not only corresponds to the minimum number of points that the jury had to award as a collective, but in all 12 previous seasons there have never been so few points from the Jury awarded. Nevertheless, thanks to the great support of the audience, Petzner was able to advance to the semifinals.
In the final on May 10, 2019, the former skier Lizz Görgl won with her professional dance partner Thomas Kraml .

Therefore, on the day of the announcement, the other editions of Dancing Stars were postponed for the time being. Whether the season can continue was still open at this point. On March 29, 2020, ORF General Director Alexander Wrabetz announced that he would not continue the season until autumn 2020. On June 16, 2020 it was announced that Vadim Garbuzov is replacing Willi Gabalier as a professional dance technician at Michaela Kirchgasser's side, as Michaela Kirchgasser cannot continue his engagement due to a contract with Servus TV.
