Strictly Come Dancing is a British television program broadcast on BBC One . It is a dance competition lasting several weeks, in which couples, each consisting of a celebrity and a professional dancer, compete. The format developed by Fenia Vardanis was exported to many other countries; the German version is called Let's Dance , the Austrian version is called Dancing Stars . In the USA the show is called Dancing with the Stars .

principle

In the program, couples are formed consisting of celebrities and professional dancers who compete against each other every week in order to impress a professional jury and the viewers and thus prevent them from being selected. Viewers can vote on their favorites by phone; the ranking of the telephone vote is added to the result of the jury. The jury consists of four members, each of whom awards one to ten points for each dance. If there are still three dance couples in the competition, the one with the most jury points receives three points, the second placed two points and the third placed one point; the results of the telephone voting are handled in the same way. In the event of a tie, the higher audience rating decides. In principle, the income from the telephone voting goes to charitable organizations.

In the first two seasons only the ten “classic” tournament dances , ie the five standard dances Slow Waltz , Quickstep , Tango , Slowfox and Viennese Waltz as well as the five Latin dances Cha-Cha-Cha , Rumba , Jive , Paso Doble and Samba were presented. However, as the number of participants and thus the number of programs increased in seasons three and four, the offer was expanded to include Mambo , East Coast Swing / West Coast Swing , Argentine Tango , Salsa and American Smooth .

Personnel / presentation

The show is broadcast on Saturday evenings on BBC One and was hosted by Bruce Forsyth and Tess Daly until season 11 . Since the twelfth season, Daly has hosted together with Claudia Winkleman , who was also involved in the show before. The jury originally consisted of Bruno Tonioli , Arlene Phillips , Len Goodman and Craig Revel Horwood . Phillips was replaced by Alesha Dixon from the seventh season , this from the tenth season by Darcey Bussell . In the seventeenth season, Motsi Mabuse again took over from Darcey Bussel.

Spin-offs

Countries with their own version of Strictly Come Dancing
  • In 2004, 2005 and 2006 a Christmas special of the show was broadcast, in which the best couples of the respective seasons again demonstrated their skills. The 2005 edition was a co-production with the US version.
  • Approx. 35 countries have their own version of the program under different titles.

Couples that only consisted of professional dancers were also allowed to participate. The national edition of Strictly Come Dancing was often used as a preliminary decision.
  • In Great Britain and some other countries there is also the program Dancing on Ice , which is structured in the same way, but - as the title suggests - takes place with skates on ice.
  • Also in Great Britain, but also in countries like Belgium , the program Just the two of us is broadcast, which is based on the same principle, but it is not about dance, but singing.
